If you are talking about mathematical units, like inches and meter, then non-standard units are what are used in other countries, and they go off of powers of 10.
This is like with 1,000 is Kilo-, 1,000,000 is Mega-, and .001 is milli-. This is easier than having something like 12 inches = 1 foot, it would be 1000 meters = 1 Kilometer.
