Fanservice has taken over the anime industry. It started about ten years ago with shows such as Love-Hina although it has progressed a lot since then and has become a lot more flamboyant (for lack of a better word). Nowadays fanservice is everywhere as it obviously increases the sales making the companies more money. Such shows include High-school DxD,  KissxSis , High-school of the dead and many more. I personally like fanservice, but only in  moderate amounts. e.g specials, the odd episode and when it seems right. Not the 10 patyshots a minute that appear to be the norm of anime nowadays. Despite this it is good for the company which allows them to make future anime, so in  a way semi-decent fanservice shows are leading  the way for much better anime. It can also be said though that fanservice is giving the anime community in general a bad image which is stopping potential fans from joining and further alienating the general population away from anime. Taking everything into regard I feel that fanservice should continue to exist as it is something that fans enjoy (hence the name FAN-service) Although it should exist in much smaller quantities as it will push away potential fans, despite this though I doubt it will stop due to the amount of money that can be made from fanservice.

That's my opinion what's yours, feel free to express and argue your points and opinions.
Potential factors: Fanservice enjoyment ?   Effect on industry?    Money?       Alienation?

Mortem-Domini : I know that fan service gains companies a lot of money, but I myself don't like it at all. I find it a bit degrading and dirty, and I'd rather it wouldn't be included. I watch anime for the plot, not the fan service. I personally think that anime loses a legion of potential fans who are avoiding it because of the fan service. I know several people who would like anime if it weren't for this very factor.

I don't mind a the odd bit of mild fan servvice here and there but it musn't ever distract from the story line because it degrades the quality of the anime. However a lot of people love the fan service in anime so I guess it is needed to fund the industry as a whole

I believe fan service is NOT necessary and can be easily limited to small amounts, or done away with completely if it creates a problem for potential fans. I read the manga of Rosario x Vampire and it was great! The anime, however, had far too many panty shots, and the first episode caused many of my friends to steer clear of it entirely.

There are anime that have no fan service but still succeed in a shocking manner, such as Pokémon, which is on season seven? Maybe further? That is a very long time for an anime to be running.

However, I'm admittedly old-fashioned and I stick to my old anime in most cases. ^^;
