Squirte might be better than charmander early on, but in later levels, blastoise is utter crap compared to other water types, and charmander is the third best fire type. The other two that beat charizard, ninetails and moltres, are only slightly better as well. I could think of a bunch of water types that simply DESTROY blastoise. Blastoise lacks the two most important stats in RBY, speed and special.

The correct choice is Bulbasaur. He is strong throughout the entire game. Venasaur is a top tier plant type, only beaten by Eggy, and tied with Victreebel. Venasaur also happens to be the only starter that has a chance of appearing on a real team of six. Good special, a good moveset, strong type, and sleep/stun powder. Yes, Eggy is better, but Vensaur is a close second.

As for the first gym, Bulbasaur can leech seed/growl the rock types, which mean's it's impossible for you to lose, even if you switched in a Caterpie. Bulbasaur also does the best at the second gym, where as squirte would be doing water vs water battles against alot of superior water types.

Actually... I would go with squirtle because no matter what I do I cant beat Blaine with Venasaur.

I pick squirtle because he has good defense and he can become blastoise.

Talking about starters, I always pick the grass type.
More often then not it will be super strong against the first part of the game until you get other type's of Pokemon and it levels quickly.
All three starters have close to equal stats so it comes down to moveset (both type and learned level), Pokemon type and leveling speed.
Grass types always seem to have this advantage over the others no matter how "cool" the others may seem.
You can always get the other starters from trades easily.

rolonoa already weighed up alot of the other benefits and downsides so I'll leave it at this for now.

charmander because i love the fire type pokemon and it evolves into one of the most kick ass pokemon in the game

I tend to get the cool pokemon anyway usuaully, so I like squirtle and charmander more than bulbasaur, but that's just me

In this instance i prefer squirtle. Because throughout the game you tend to get some good defence stats.

Genrally i think it is always best to go with a strong fire type pokemon especially ones that can learn earthquake or strong moves like that.

My favourite starter type I say is...Mudkip I love strong water types. Water type pokemon are the best.

my favorite starter would have to be squirtle because it evolves in to blastories and learns skull bash

on red, blue version i say it's charmander, i like dragons that spit or throw a huge flame from his mouth, specially that, i always read some mythology and legends about some creatures like unicorn, phoenix, gryphon specially dragon. and in silver, gold and crystal, my favorite was totodile. i know he is a reptile, but he is so strong like blastoise.

well, mine should be charmander or rather charizard, because he is the only one closest to dragon type. i just have to get all the dragon types, they r my favorites ^^

I usually always go with the Water types! My squirtle was so awesome. He can easily take out the entire Elite 4!

I vote for squirtle. squirtle is not a bad pokemon to have..

squirtle!!!because of its great moves overall usefullness and great advantage of learning tm's and lets not forget the most important one he just looks cool.(I dont care what you people say he jsut is period)
