Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne is still a popular game to this day, believe it or not.
The main game's genre is real-time strategy and is referred to as "ladder", but 
there exists many mods [dubbed "custom games" on Battle.net (classic)]. 
Battle.net 2.0 is the version on StarCraft II.

Anywho, the custom gaming community is still quite active on Battle.net, which 
is free, by the way. Most notable is the DotA community, from which many related
online games have been influenced, e.g. League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth.

Real-time strategy is completely different than mmorpg (World of Warcraft).

There is no true reason to play Warcraft III. To the best of my knowledge it gets no updates. If anyone wants to play that, they might as well be playing Starcraft II.
