What is a Raspberry Ketone and do I need them?

They are in the local shop and are sold in little pills that smell of raspberries in a capsule, but artificial like a child's sweets smell.

Can these mega expensive raspberries be any good for me?

Powdered raspberries at $20 a bottle?

This is all I could gather about them from a friend that Raspberry Ketone is the primary aromatic substance found in raspberries which give them their distinctive smell and Ketones are the phenolic compounds extracted from raspberries. The word 'phenolic' represents a class of natural substances that are found in plants.

But what is a Ketone? and why is something that is good for me and that makes the smell?

I am sure I heard about ketones in ketosis in the breath from eating too much protein on Atkins?

Have you bought these products have you used them or know anyone who has

What is your opinion?

Totts Well, actually, my brother Elpizo saw something about them on Dr. Oz, here is what he said:
"They are basically a weight loss pill, they separate fat so it is burned faster or something", and I looked it up, and it is supposed to be a "wonder pill" for weight loss.  It is apparently "the" thing for weight loss and is the fastest selling pill on the market.  So yeah, it
would be priced high, anything that "works" for weight loss always sells high.
Hope it helped.
*Edit: my text was messed up*

Like Hidden Phantom said these things do work. To tell you what they do is this: You take the pill than from 15-3 hrs later the effect will kick in depending on how much fiber you have had. The pill then gets into your fat and splits it up. This way it is very easy to burn. Hidden Phantom is right when it is fast selling but I would like to add a super in front of fast. Once Dr. Oz recommended them stores that had up to 10000 of them ran out in just days. These work very well, although they are expensive but if you need to loose weight buy them, they are worth it. I have a friend whose mom took it and in 2 weeks had lost 30 pounds.

Just to add to what the two before me said, and answer your question about Ketones:

A Ketone is simply a type compound, or molecule. Ketose is a type of Ketone (or rather, contains one ketone), and makes up many sugars. Acetone is also a Ketone. Thus, the sweet smelling breath some diabetics get is a result of a buildup of Ketone in the body, increasing it's acidity.

So "Ketone" in raspberry ketone, simply describes the type of compound... it would be like saying "Penut Fatty Acid" or "Cheese Lactic Acid". Raspberry Ketone is the Ketone produced by raspberries that gives it it's fragrance, and is used for flavoring (though very expensive, like Saffron). Some say it has health benefits, like weight loss.

Couple of things:

1) Ketosis is the burning of fat cells for energy, it doesn't have anything to do with breath.

2) At warehouse stores like Costco or Sam's Club you can get them for like $15... every little bit helps, right?

I have not personally tried them, but I have been considering it. I would like an actual doctor recommendation though, not Dr. Oz (tv doctors seem to have problems with credibility)

I'm not a doctor yet, but I will be next year, so I'll try to give you guys as much info as I can here. So hopefully I can add a little extra info and answer some questions you might have. As always, if you do have a concern about adding a pill to your use, it's best to check with a doctor first.

Raspberry Ketones are a raspberry extract to put it simply. Instead of having to eat close to 100 pounds of raspberries for a dose, the drug manufacturers take the ketones (the active ingredient) and put it into a pill to take. The theory of how this works is that it might cause fat to be broken down a little faster than usual. I say "theory" because it's never been proven to work in people. The only study where it has shown to work is it was shown to cause a small amount of weight loss in rats.

Now I'm not saying raspberry ketones don't work, I'm just saying that it hasn't been show to actually do what it claims to do. The medical literature shows that a lot of these newer "get thin quick" pills tend to not differ significantly from pill to pill. Essentially, this means that if there is weight loss achieved, it hasn't been proven that it is due to the pill itself, or if it's from the person believing it works (placebo effect), or actually due to exercise or diet changes.

A good general rule to go by if you want to add a supplement or vitamins to your diet, if it's expensive and/or requires you to take multiple a day, it is much less likely to be beneficial and more likely to be a scam. People are always looking for that easy fix, and it is nobody's fault, it is just human nature. If you are looking to lose weight, while any fads/pills/whatever may help in the short term, you will NEVER be able to keep the weight off long term without dietary changes and exercise.

If you have any further questions about how any of this works, or about other vitamin/supplement questions, reply and I'll be more than happy to share what I know.
