Ok, I'm not a Half-Life fan (never played the games a day in my life, so I can't be negative or positive) but I wanna see what the Vizzed Community thinks about the next entry into the franchise with a sea of fanatics. (and has been declared Game of the Decade at the 2012 VGAs). Will it happen or not? If yes, when. If no, why. I think it will happen but as a promotional stunt for Valve's potential game system. (I think its called the Steambox. Not sure correct me if I'm wrong.)

See, I figured out a while back why Valve is never going to make Half-Life 3, and why they don't make third installments in general. Unlike most companies who are mostly in it for the money, they're want to make critically well-received games; they want to be considered that respectable company that doesn't milk its franchises. So, from that standpoint, why would they ever make a third installment to any series? It will only ever be worse than the second and a major disappointment. The only times I can think of where people agree that a third installment is better than the second are when people hated the second to begin with, like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, or Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and since everyone loved Half-Life 2 and Portal 2, that doesn't change anything.

...by that logic, though, they might eventually make a Left 4 Dead 3. Maybe.

Well, I think Valve is sitting on a gold mine with all of its franchises. As long as Valve makes its 3rd installments as great or better (if possible) as the sequel, they won't lose fan base. And maybe they won't go through with a Half-Life 3, odds are they may go with a HD remake of Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Whatever they do will be the driving force for their game system.
