The Dark Tower books are my favorite books of all time. Has anyone else gotten into these? If so would anyone like it turned into a movie/mini-series? Also who do you have in mind as certain characters. Susanna Dean is Hally Berry in my mind. Roland would be a tough cast, got to be tough and smart and honestly not to good-looking. They don't call him old Long and Ugly for nothing.

The books are my favorites too, I should read them again at some point. I would love to see them try to create them into a mini-series since that's how it would work best in my opinion. I had read rumors that they were trying to make a movie out of it, but that would not work, because there's so much into the whole story that can't be told in a single movie.

As for the cast, I don't know much about the new, rising talents of these days, but as for Roland, I'd go for Josh Brolin. He's not that tall of a guy, but I think he could do the character justice.

In King's defense, he did pretty much say not to read the end. I know, I know, what kind of cop-out is that, right? Who is going to read seven books to not read the ending! Ha! I also enjoyed 1-5 more than the final two so i hear ya, although i didn't dislike the final two.
I agree that a mini-series is the way to go. I looked up Josh Brolin and i would be ok with that. My favorite book was Wizard and Glass so i also wonder about young Roland. Either way it needs to be made. I have the patience to read this kind of epic. My friends do not. The only way i could get them to know the story is visually, which is to bad, everyone knows the book is always better than the movie(show)!

The ending wasn't that bad. Typical Stephen King move. Kinda Like the end of The Stand with Flagg and the aborigines. Wastelands was by far the best. The parts with the city of Lud was great. What about Liam Nieson as Roland?

Wastlelands is definitely up there for me. It's that whole part of the story up until about they get to Thunderclap(so 3-5ish), that is just so great. It's probably the best thing I've ever read. After looking back 1 and 2 are really just an introduction to the rest of the story. They still do fine on their own, but nothing compared to the greatness to come.
I personally love the VERY end. I only know 2 other people who have read it -not including people in this thread, ha- and neither liked the end. So to each his own I guess. I'm sure spoilers aren't really pertinent but just to be careful I'll just say "Horn of Eld" ..how awesome.

I also loved The Stand. How pimp is Randel Flagg?! It's religious undertones make it great for anyone who went through Catholic schools. My favorite character in that one was Nick Andros.

*Goes to listen to ZZ Top's Velcro Fly*

The Stand is hands down the best single piece of work King has done. Did you pick up on a lot of the similarities between characters in the Tower series and The Stand? Eddie=Larry Underwood, Walter=Flagg(Actually that is one of the names Walter takes on in I think Wizards and Glass), Roland=Stu Redman, Oy=Kojak. I love Flagg's character in the Stand. Grins and jokes followed by decapitations. And the Velcro Fly reference in Wastelands is hilarious!

I definitely agree with the character connections.

Am I thinking wrong -it's been a while since I read them - or is Walter O'Dim and Marten Broadcloak actually Flagg? I think it is.. The Walkin' Dude is awesome. I knew this to be true when the girl spy(Can't remember..Laura?) in The Stand goes to stab him and sees that she's holding a banana!!

Yeah Stu is a great character just like Roland. I know the movie The Stand is cheesy but King did a fine job with Stu, Glenn and Nick's characters.

By the way, where did the Pink Ball go after Roland showed everyone his past? They confront Flagg and the Tic-Toc-Man at that Palace and it rolls but doesn't break. They then use it to see into Rolands' past (Rhea...) they are then somehow back on the path of the beam where they find the note and snacks and whatnot but they don't have it?! Does anyone know what happened to it?!?!

Marten, Walter and Flagg are all the same guy. Its suppose to be a sorcerer/slash demon like character that takes on different forms. I heard somewhere he modeled the Flagg after the Rolling Stones song Sympathy for the Devil. Remember the part in The Stand where they talk about all of the different forms Flagg takes on and all of the different names he has. Just as in the Stones song where they talk about St Petersburgh, The Troubadours, etc. I think King originally meant for Flagg to be the antagonist in the  DT series but later made Crimson King the end all bad guy.

That's a good question about the Pink orb from W&G . I can't remember how the pink ball fell out of the story. In five they jumped right  to Black 13 from Callahan. For some reason I though Walter got a hold of it and it became part of the orbs that the Crimson King collected.

Dana was the girl spy in Stand. The movie was cheesy but the real big epics like that almost have to be a movie miniseries. If the Stand could have maybe done on say HBO or Showtime it would have been much cooler. ABC did The Stand mini series back in the early 90s. They also did a version of the Shining which was actually much more accurate to the book than Kubrick's version. In order to even do Dark Tower the way it deserves to be done it would take at least 8 two hour episodes to even tell the story the right way. But I would love to see it done. HBO could totally do a miniseries. But I just cant see them taking it on.
