Family guy is the best of the two. Family guys is far funnier than American dad but it does have some funny scenes. Btw american dad does have one awesome character and that is the alien.

Now before contrasting the two I'd like to point out to similar things between them: the familiar art style seen when watching both shows. 
   Now, onto contrasting them; Family Guy and American Dad have crude humor (Which apparently hooks people to a specific show) but I have felt Family Guy's has been more unrealistic (EXAMPLE: In Family Guy Peter [the father] fights a chicken. Chris, [Peter's son] has a "evil" monkey who lives in his closet) while American Dad's has been more realistic (EXAMPLE: One episode in American Dad is about the father's son being bullied because of him lacking muscularity and strength from if I remember correctly, the swim team. His father resorts to use Steroids [A real drug which is commonly abused, COUGH, BARRY BONDS, COUGH!] and then gives his son breasts [ a common side-effect of Steroids, however, usually it takes time for it to develop, which is a unrealistic factor].). But really it's up to the people to decide which they like more or if they chose to like both. As I have said somewhere like a hundred posts + past; "Everyone is subject to THEIR opinion. And people shouldn't have to be criticized by THEIR opinion."

I gotta go with Family Guy, in my opinion American Dad is just a crappy spin off of Family Guy, yes it's made by the same people but it's just a horrible show compared to Family Guy to me.
