Now, I know many people on here are not married or anything but I recently became engaged with my girlfriend. After doing so now we are running around and planning things but that is another topic. But what are the best qualities you find in marriage? I think of mine so far not being married and all is. Spending triple the time together planning things out for the wedding. That is all I'm off to bed and will check back tomorrow afternoon.

redskiller76 : First congratulations on your engagement. For me being someone who hasn’t had success when it comes to relationships the biggest thing for a successful relationship or marriage would be trust. There is not much worth while without trust.

I've been married for seven years, I've been dating since the mid-90s and let me make a suggestion.

Be engaged but hold off on a wedding. 

You're still young, you're still figuring out who you are and what you want to be.  I'm not trying to poohpooh marriage.  Marriage is glorious and I love it.  I'm happy.  But my wife and I spent six years together and figured out where we stand.  We didn't rush into things and we're better for it. Folks who get married young are much more likely to not make it.  They decide they're not for each other.

Anyway, I'm sorry.  Here's the answer to your question.  The best things in marriage are knowing exactly who I'm getting when I wake up every day.  I love that my wife and I can have a conversation with a few looks and facial movements.  We can read each other and tell exactly what's going on.  We work together against the world and we're always supportive and loving of each other.  I can be safe in my house with my wife like nowhere else.

warmaker : After a while after this post we decided to postpone for a while and just settle on an engagement factor. But if it all works out marriage will be a thing to happen. But thanks for the reply!

redskiller76 : Probably the best thing. Like it was said, you are young. Typically, these years are the time you are still breaking away from relying on parents and it is your time to be selfish. It is best to get through those selfish years before you commit like that. My wife and I started dating right before high school graduation back in 2006. We just got married this last June. We even lived together for a little over 4 of those years and engaged for 2.5 of them. If you truly believe you can spend the rest of your life together, marriage is no rush. Have your fun selfish years so you don't lose them due to marriage. It is more difficult to not be selfish in the relationship when you haven't had that time to do that.

Anyway, somewhat engaged also and what will be the best thing for marriage is the feeling of trust and love and also interdependency. Marriage might be heavy from times but it will be worth it.

I believe it's comprimise. You may be getting married, but you two are still individuals who have desires, wants, and interests that may not always be the same. Being able to appreciate one another even through differences, and have the patience and willingness to do things together and apart.

It will sound cliché, but my wedding was one of the happiest day of life. It brought us so much closer. However, be sure she IS the right person. I married on our 5th anniversary.
