I don't know if it technically counts as an anime but the original Aeon Flux cartoon was very Anime-esque. If you don't count that than it was Dragon Ball Z, Lupin the Third, or Big O, I started watching all of those around the same time in fourth or fifth grade.

Avatar the Last Airbender was the first anime that I ever saw. Code Geass was the second. They both were fantastic! I've watched every single Avatar episode multiple times.

The first series I didn't watch on TV as a kid would have been NIchijou (also known as My Ordinary Life in some areas), which is a very zany anime I can't really describe very well. Go watch it on Crunchyroll (or if you dislike their ads, use some other site.)
