First off let me start off by saying that in NO WAY is this an argument about Religion. So that being said...

Rule 1: No talk about God or Religion on this thread as I want this to focus on a Government, Society, and Politics standpoint.

Now then.

When I say this to you: A Perfect or Ideal Society. What do you think of? Do you think of a society that doesn't discriminate? One that doesn't have crisis's to deal with? One where the Government tells you the truth about what is happening? So here is question 1 for you guys to answer.

Question 1: What do you think of when I say "Perfect Society" or "Ideal Society"

Now let me ask you all this now.

We can all agree (or debate) that this "ideal society" is one that is by all means "Ideal" or "Perfect". Now when something is Perfect, it doesn't need to change if I'm correct? Now, this seems to conflict with society.

How you might ask? Well society overtime has changed and improved. We went from a period of Absolutism during the Medieval Ages to Democracy in the Modern era. We went from working/crafting pots, clothing, and other similar works of art by hand to having them all being created by machines. Humanity as a whole has improved their lives to make it easier and perhaps better (the latter being debatable).

Now if we can agree that society has progressed (and sometimes regressed, look up The Dark Ages if you don't understand) and seems that society will continue this trend. Here comes question 2.

Question 2: If society progresses and regresses over time, then can perfection ever be achieved?

Now let us suppose in a hypothetical sinerio that society does achieve perfection. Here comes the final question.

Question 3: If society achieves perfection, then can it progress further or regress?

I'm going to calarify the question. In this hypothetical sinerio, society achieves perfection; then where does society go after that? Since we can agree (or debate) that society constantly progresses and regresses; then it should be safe to say that the "Perfect society" will progress or regress.

However I would argue that this would go against the notion of a "Perfect Society" as if Perfection has no room for change as it has achieved perfection (of course), however we can agree (or argue) that Society does change in points of time. So this seems like this can't be possible.

Another hypothetical question, let us take technology for example. Let us assume that technology in a "Perfect Society" has been maximized to make humanity's life easy. Now once this is achieved, does the development of new technology stop once this is achieved? Since technology in this "Perfect Society" has been maximized to make humanity's life easy, I would argue that we would no longer need to develop new technology, as humanity has no need for it.

However, I would argue that this is not true as humanity has become obessed with the newest addition of technology (Apple products for example). Since we tend to what new stuff, we would want to continue to develop new technology. However if we achieve a "Perfect Society", then this would conflict as I would argue that since new technology would cease to be develop in a "Perfect Society".

This is quite a read so I'm going to re-list the questions and rules.

Question 1: What do you picture when I say "Ideal Society" or "Perfect Society"?

Question 2: If society progresses and regresses over time, then can a "Perfect Society" ever be achieved?

Question 3: If a society does achieve perfection, then where does it go from there?

Rule 1: No talk of God or Religion on this thread, I want this to be viewed from a Government, Society, and Politics point of view (Theocracys are allowed).

Rule 2: Please explain your answers. Don't just give one word answers or short, non-descripted answers.

Its somewhat similar to this:
https://www.vizzed.com/boards/thread.php?id=47013
But given the listed questions it dosent really seem to be the same persay, so.

1:
Ideal society/perfect society
I think of those as 2 different things. The perfect society would be flawless, no murders, human errors or selfish actions etc.
The ideal society would be one where most things I felt were important were in place, though there could be a few things here and there that arent right. maybe still too much criminality, intolerance etc. For instance if I say something is not ideal I dont think of that as meaning it wont do/isnt fit for purpose. I think of that as meaning its not everything id want from it but it serves the key functions, it will do.

2:
I think that if we reached an ideal society, so long as there was something else to strive for you'd always be heading for perfect society and never quite getting there.
And while many areas have progressed, others have regressed. For example during the times of empire the land was generally fairly stable, once the superpowers were gone chaos ensued. The same thing happened when the roman empire collapsed, every territory scrambled for the leftovers. Africa, asia and the middle east ended up with kings, dictators or corrupt governments. Mali, zimbabwe, Somalia, North Korea, to be honest, they were probably all better off both before they were colonised and while they were colonised.
The point of that rant was that while many places have progressed, many have slid downhill.

3:
I dont think it is possible to reach perfection, so long as there is one more thing we want changed its not perfect is it? perhaps its best that way too, if you get complacent or think its good enough you stagnate.
I think the usa got the idea it had the perfect society, then the dustbowls occured, farming was effected, the finance sectors collapsed because people had been buying beyond there means, important industrys like car manufacturers were crippled because they had thoughtlessly expanded, and the government hadnt bothered watching over Americas progress or making the neccessary changes. Crime and poverty sky rocketed, etc etc. America was saved from economic doom by 2 world wars.
If it had been perfect, this would not have occured. perfect is really a word used too loosely, and people shouldnt feel that its perfect, becauser theres always room for improvement, improvement dosent occur if you get lazy and decide its good enough.

4(hypothetical):
Again, always room for improvement. If we make new tech, we can sell it to consumers. We could also reduced operation costs of the machines, increase work life, increase speed, precision, intelligence, make them self cleaning and repairing, make them energy independent, make them stronger, give them personality's, make them explore the stars, there's always something else to be done. So long as we can imagine something we can strive for it.

thenumberone : That thread does seem similar. However, like you said the questions I've asked don't seem as the same. Plus I'm rebuting the notion of a Perfect Society rather then asking a general question like the last one did.

But if one of the Local Mods wishes to close it because its to similar, then by all means.
