I'm also a member of a programming forum that is dedicated for teaching and learning. I share everything I've learned to those who need help, and in return, I get to learn from people who have more experience in programming. I've contributed a lot but haven't gotten any plus points from my contributions, but I'm alright with that. What I'm so pissed off about was when I got many points from one, short, useless, non-worthy post I've made in a thread while having a casual conversation with others, but none for my efforts to help people through making many thorough and long posts that needed hours of my time just to get those done. Not to mention that they're also fast to give negative points with just one mistake, but rarely give plus to those who are worthy of it.

Okay, end of rant.

That sort of thing happens because a lot of the time people don't realize that certain posts require a lot of effort but they enjoy a shorter post that may not require as much effort on your part but was helpful or amusing for them.

You're right, hahaha, and if that's their thing and that's what makes them happy, I don't see any reason to stop them.
But that has changed my views about those people who have really high points on that site.

Hm, that's interesting. I used to be fairly active on some of the Udacity forums for some of their classes and I got a decent number of points for being helpful. It sounds like the place you're going to is about more than just learning, though, and people don't really care about being helpful. It'd be nice to see a site like that have an off-topic section where posts couldn't earn points.

Funny or amusing comments always earn the most points. It kind of sucks, but if you're just doing it for the recognition, maybe you should be doing something more rewarding instead?

Juliet : I can understand where you’re coming from. I am a writer and have spent most of my life writing in one way or another. Despite years of hard work and sacrificing a lot and paying my dues I haven’t found a good way to make a solid living off my work. It’s frustrating when you do everything you can for people you work for and you aren’t compensated in return for your contributions. I realize you’re situation is a little different but I can relate to where you’re coming from.

It definitely doesn’t make sense to me that you wouldn’t be compensated a little more for your efforts. Since I don’t really know much about programming the only advice I can offer is to keep your head up. As for me, I’m in a down period right now in regard to my work and have felt a bit demoralized myself because of having little to show for my contributions and such. It’s frustrating hopefully this year will be a year that things turn around for me. At least I hope so.
