Since I almost always play as Ness, this is what I do,
1) jump around and use in air attacks
2) don't use the items, but throw them at the person when they are trying to come back on the map
3) plant mines in strategic places and since I am Ness, set it off with the psy power when an enemy comes near
4) Hit an enemy while on the ground with an up attack button, and while they are in air, use the down attack button to smash them back to the ground, doing massive damage and then hitting them to the left or right to knock them off the map
