In Pokémon there is one way to level up, (other than in Pokémon yellow) battle, battle, and battle. Walk through grass and battle, then replenish your Pokémon's health, and battle some more! Some times you can find people that will help raise your Pokémon for you! Look for hidden houses, and talk to people inside of them.

Try using the speed ability to grind through enemies. I used the speed feature to beat the game in one day. The speed allowed me to skip through the whole game.
