Mr_Ronok: Actually, I agree highly with this. I recently purchased Left 4 Dead 2, and the atmospheric music relating to different situations (Relaxed, suspenseful, terrifying, etc.) goes really well with the Horror Genre. And nothing beats killing zombies to Good ol' Metal.

Am I allowed to post links to Youtube videos? Because if not there won't be any point in making a list. I want it to be interactive. Let's leave it that my #1 fave is the "Killer Instinct" theme.

Ayyy... I have too many favorites .
Some of them would be theme of love MGS4, 8 melodies, SMB main theme, LOZ main theme, and a few others.
I'll fully update the list when I can remember them all.

Don't mention it, TrollStone. I suppose it won't take more than a few seconds to copy and paste. I'm still a little uncertain since one of the videos (the only video of the track in question I could find) has curse words in its subtitles and I don't know if those sorts of links are allowed either. But I doubt the mods will mind, and if they do then we can always remove that particular link.

Of course it’s not a very good list. You can tell how limited and myopic my experience with games is from all the times the same franchise gets repeated on it. But I thought I’d share anyway, if only for the sake of creating a good playlist. As I don’t know enough about modern games to make many judgments this list is old school only. Covers and arrangements of pre-existing tunes don’t count, and neither does the entire game of “Rez”, which I disqualified on the technicality that you’re co-authoring the music yourself and doing it differently every time you play.

30. The theme from “Pitfall II: Lost Caverns” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JcZi3oJkVVo). I don’t know if “Pitfall II” was the first game with a full soundtrack but I doubt there were a *whole* lot before it. What I love most is the way the music changes its mood and tempo based on what’s happening. When you’re doing well you hear a quick, jaunty march; when things slow down again the music does too, and sounds both indifferent and determined at the same time. When you make a mistake the music laments it with you. Despite the breakthrough involved this theme goes at the tail end of the list because it always bothers me how close it sounds to the “Raiders of the Lost Ark” theme.

29. “Sutakora, Sassa” from “Golden Axe” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sE0ZQ_Kj5ow). The mood whiplash alone is worth a placement on the list. Out of context it may not be as impressive as it is catchy but this silly end theme is hilarious after all the game’s previous “Conan the Barbarian”-style brutality and darkness.

28. “Las Vegas” from “Side Pocket” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ_DYfsMDJw). Romantic, crystalline beauty and pure levity together in perfect harmony.

27. Snake Man’s theme from “Mega Man 3” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpVIM8de2xw). It’s alien and relatable at once, kind of like the cantina music from “Star Wars”.

26. The opening music from the NES game “Willow” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uS9ywWfv-_w). I would call it “cinematic” but most cinema isn’t this cinematic.

25. The opening theme from “Streets of Rage” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2Lrd9DHIpA). Rarely has a cutscene matched its music so eerily perfectly.

24. The stage music from “Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1R1-hXIeiKI). There was almost no music at all in the game besides this brief loop and yet somehow we never got tired of it. Somehow it never failed to get the blood flowing.

23. The high score screen music from “X-Out” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4WOhUjrn3w). I wouldn’t have known about this had it not been for that Benzaie video. He’s done me quite a favor, I would say.

22. The opening theme from “Section Z” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11zTAsbXdk4). If three hundred years from now the United States Marines aren’t using this instead of “Simper Fidelis” I’m going to be rolling in my grave.

21. “Remembering Daventry” from “King’s Quest: Mask of Eternity” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSYl4A80aNw). If every time a house was looted by some crazy adventurer this music played there’d be no material possessions left in the world.

20. “Rose of May” from “Final Fantasy IX” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxZlJGtFGcw). Believe it or not I’ve never played this game either. I don’t care. This music still rules.

19. The Erana’s Peace theme from “Quest for Glory” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDUrQSIRgOo). Am I having a near-death experience?? Oh no, wait, I can’t be. In heaven there wouldn’t be dust all over everything.

18 and 17. Here we have a two-way tie between the Flugelheim Museum level music from the Sega Genesis “Batman” game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6aZsRdLbqw) and the stage one music from the NES “Batman” game (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlGDKfgz4fA). Both were adaptations of the same film by the same company (Sunsoft). Both would make excellent themes for the character of Batman himself. The former is a better melody; the latter has a more euphonic execution. The former is more exciting, the latter more atmospheric. Take your pick between them.

16 and 15. Here we have yet another tie (it’s a pure fluke that the two ties of the list are in a row), this time between the underwater music from “Super Mario Bros.” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oENf0F2Asc) and the underwater music called “Aquatic Ambience” from “Donkey Kong Country” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDvKwSVuUGA). The former simulates ideally the joy and excitement of undersea exploration, the latter just as ideally the wonder and beauty.

14. “Birth of the People” from “Actraiser” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0a2ENyUfo_8). Play this at a Renaissance fair and I’ll attend it every single day.

13. Kraid’s theme from “Metroid” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UGKCvIrF_o). Something is lurking just around the corner and it isn’t just evil, it’s *slimy*.

12. The oasis music from “King’s Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HjPqvCp_aQ). What can I say except that it fits the concept perfectly?

11. The Gerudo Valley music from “The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy0aEj85ifY). There are probably a hundred stories that could be inspired by a single listening—and every single one of them involves twilit desert landscapes, knives in the back, and mysterious femme fatales.

10. The drowning music from the original “Sonic the Hedgehog” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Yw5jkAHgME). The emotion of panic itself in musical form.

9. The museum theme from “Namco Museum Vol. 1” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKbNppW7FRg&feature=relmfu). Let this dulcet meditational music soothe you after the last video link.

8. “Ascension to the Castle” from “Super Castlevania IV” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgv9c7qNTcY). I can feel the cold wind blowing and smell the rotted plants in the air. It’s palpable.

7. The mini-boss music from “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBTAGVnfXAw). After listening to this it’s a little hard to understand why so many people disbelieved, before it was confirmed, that Michael Jackson was one of the composers. Perhaps they thought it was written by one of those *other* high-pitched male black singers who are always going “hoo!” and “sshcome-owwwwn”.

6. “Bloody Tears” from “Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest” (though originally from “Haunted Castle”) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK3_MO4ePYs). This is “Castlevania” boiled down to a single half-minute loop: dark and dreary yet hopeful and heroic; Gothic, otherworldly and catchy.

5. The Land of the Clouds theme from the SCI-VGA version of “King’s Quest 1: Quest for the Crown” (at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xz1VQjJm80E; scroll back a bit to the sixteen minute mark or so; the track lasts till a little after the seventeen minute mark—and is quickly followed by a very loud scare chord so be careful). So mysterious. So unique. So beautiful.

4. The end credits music from “Super Mario 64” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVKj3u8JUm0). This may well be the best “happy ending” music in history, period. It’s ecstatic, and yet lurking underneath there is a curiously ironic sadness, perhaps representing how unfortunate it is that it all has to end, or perhaps how hard it is for your heart to take the joy of the best news.

3. The moon level music from “DuckTales” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_80PQ543rM). The spirit of exploration and adventure given an infectious rhythm which makes it hard for you to keep still.

2. The opening theme from “The Legend of Zelda” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyMKWJ5e1kg). I don’t know whether the rumor is true that the music from this game was ripped off from “April” by Deep Purple, only that the resemblance is a large part of the reason why I like it so much. If you’re going to steal, steal from the best of them. But really, it isn’t *all* that similar.

1. The opening theme from “Killer Instinct” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIhv-M4uIT8). I wish I could put the whole soundtrack on here. This certainly suffices; indeed, if every video game ever made had to play only one track all the time, this would *still* suffice.

I’m not getting as much joy out of writing critical lists as I used to. It feels more like work now. But who knows? This may well not be the last.

I guess my favorite video game music is probably all from F-Zero X, I'd say either Dream Chaser or the Title Music. Both very great songs.

Honorable mentions would include the Star Wolf theme from Star Fox Assault, Dr. Wiley's Castle from Mega Man 2, and Yearnings of the Wind from Chrono Trigger.

Of course, this is an extremely broad topic, there are literally hundreds of other songs from video games that I adore, but these are the ones that popped up into my head first.

Mother 3 and EarthBound's music kicks all other Music all across the universe and Back.
Mostly Mother 3's Love theme and EarthBound's Otherworldly foe.
Chrono Trigger has some epic music too, Like Frog's theme, Boss Battle 1, and Determination.

My favorite video game music is the Palm Tree Panic song from the European version of Sonic CD. It was fast and fun to listen to. I also like some of the songs in streets of rage.

The tunes from the Pokemon and Zelda series knock me off my feet with every new game. Also, the songs from Mario and Mega Man are quite catchy.

The soundtracks for Donkey Kong Country are exceptionally well done. As well as the DOS version of Descent.

I like a lot of video game songs, but atm I want to say Kingdom Hearts has really good music.
Yeah, of course Zelda, Mother 3, Megaman, Chrono Trigger and countless more are at least as awesome in music as Kingdom Hearts is.
Just too difficult to decide, but actually I guess 'Saria's Song' from LoZ OoT is my favorite...
Wait. I still can't really decide.

I like a lot of Nintendo and Sega songs. Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Kirby, Sonic. They are all wonderful. Sega songs are bright and cheerful, but could also be sinister. Nintendo published some of the greatest songs ever including their orchestra songs with the Mario and Zelda series. They are all great, wonderful, masterpieces!
