I was typing up a large post in a pet topic, recounting some of the many pets I had, and I wanted to include a photo of my latest pet. I attached the photo, did a spell check of my post, and then hit submit. A message declaring my photo was too large appeared and it started to redirect me. Unfortunately, the page it sent me to did not fully load: it showed the "message center" bar on top, as well as the general topper with the banner/edit profile area, and  the bottom page of Site info/sponsor area. Nothing else. I tried refreshing, and when that did not work, I hit my back button, and all my work was lost.

Admittedly, I am a little upset about that, but I know these things happen. I just wish to inform people about this problem so either it may hopefully be fixed, or so people are aware of this and perhaps are more careful so not to fall victim of this themselves. If it matters, I last saw about 1300 words on the counter.

It's not really a bug, as that is generally what happens. Although I do agree that it would be nice if the Help Center included information about post and image sizes. Still, it is important to remember that when you are working with data online, always make a backup as you go. Vizzed may partially be at fault, but so were you for not saving a copy. At least we all learned something!

ruesen : Well, you could've always saved a copy like Zack said.

Really however, there should be something in the FAQ. If not, then someone should put something saying how big an image can be when you are posting something.

Not to sound rude, but it's actually more your fault. Right in the picture attachment bar, alongside the "Choose File" button above the post box, there is a message in italics-

Allowed File Types: .jpg , .jpeg , .gif , or .png (200 KBs or less)

That's about as blatant as it can get. If it was in giant font it would be a nuisance. You just have to pay attention to your file size next time.

Also, as Zack said, saving a copy is always good. If I type a large post, I open Notepad and copy/paste the post into there. It's easier than waiting for Word and having to deal with any formatting crap. Notepad files are tiny and leave out the formatting crap, so I kinda overuse it anyway.

I am aware I should back up my typings, and to be honest, I usually do once I hit a certain amount of content. However, at the time, I was used to forums that when you make an error, return you to your post screen with text included, no harm or foul. Also, it is easy to forget to save your work on here, which was the case this time. I am also aware the post loss comes down to my fault in the end, but the bug in the forums still remains.

I do not think the site needs a "clearer" warning on picture size, that is not the issue I have here. The problem was that the site had to first direct me to the error message when I made the picture mistake, then tried and failed to redirect me to my post causing a loss of work. Directing me to a separate page to indicate my error seems unnecessary and as my case proved, buggy.

A simpler solution to me would be to just show the error on the posting page; I hit "submit reply/post, page loads up the reply page again, but this time has an error next to the picture attachment saying my picture was too large. Or a Javascript message pops up when I hit submit reply/post, telling me my error. Either of those would have worked and may have saved the post too.
