So I finally caved and decided to post one of my favorite poems that I wrote as a high schooler. I'm only posting one so that I can see what kind of feedback I get. If anyone wants me to post more or write more, I will. However, my poetry isn't something I share often. XD
I'm not too proud of the -rhythm- of this piece in a few places, but it was mainly the concept I enjoyed. Most of my poetry from that time is pretty playful.
A worm and a caterpillar who both share the earth
Were bragging and boasting about what each was worth
Says the caterpillar to the worm, “Someday I will fly.”
Says the worm in disbelief, “I’d like to see you try.”
The caterpillar smiles and says, “Someday I’ll look nice.”
The worm just laughs and looks away. “Someday you’ll pay the price.”
The caterpillar begins to frown and says, “At least I’ve got feet.”
The worm says, “Yes, but if we race, I won’t admit defeat.”
Says the touchy caterpillar, “I’ll help plants germinate.”
Says the worm, “You’ll save the world, going at that rate.”
The caterpillar growls and says, “I’m still better than you.”
The worm turns and crawls away. “We’ll see if that is true.”
Seasons go by and both critters go their own ways
Each trying to disprove what the other says
Caterpillar tries to show everyone that he is the best
Worm just tries to prove each boast worse than the rest
Then one day, Caterpillar boasts he’s making a cocoon
He’s leaving, but he’ll be back as soon as it is June
Worm watches for Caterpillar’s return very patiently
He waits everyday as he wonders anxiously
Then one day, the cocoon opens and out comes Butterfly
Worm shouts, “Where is Caterpillar?” as he looks him in the eye
Butterfly laughs and says, “Why, he is here!”
Worm, understanding, wipes away a tear
Butterfly brags and boasts until day turns to night
But then his curiosity is aroused by a strange light
Ignoring Worm’s warnings, he goes to check it out
Now all the bugs learned a lesson, because Butterfly’s no longer about.
The poem is called: The Bug Zapper
