First off, let me state that it is not my intent to offend any high schoolers here on this site.

Rather, I want to discuss the worries and concerns I see facing today's generations.  As a teachers, I get to see many of them in person, and it can be quite scary and overwhelming.  Over the past several years, I've come up with one phrase I believe describes it all:

Today's generation is very
self-entitled.

Maybe this only applies to American students, but most seem to think they are right on par with adults.  They talk to adults as though they are equals, and they think they deserve the same rights as their elders.

If we try to give them advice, they accuse of being 'smart' with them or of being sarcastic.
If we catch them being dishonest, they act as though we are horrible people for confronting them.
If we set rules, they feel they have no obligation to follow them.

There is much I can say, but I'll let others offer their opinions first.

Didn't you have a similar thread posted on the School thread? Maybe I'm just confused lol.

As a college student who graduation almost 2 years ago I can say that High School tends to be a time conflict for students. Yes they oldier and suposed to be mature, but they are not children anymore. When you get your driver's license, new car, age to gamble, and legal age for sex (well not true as we are finding out that middle schoolers are now having sex as well...I'm not joking.) you tend to view that you are on the same level as an adult because an adult also has a driver's license, a car, can gamble, and have sex (legally need I remind you). But when your in an enviornment where your still being treated like you were in elementary school, you dislike the fact that your not being accepted as a young adult. This is all my opinion by the way. I bet that if you ask your students the same question they would agree with my opinion on some points.

Oldschool41 :  I didn't have a thread like this.  I just had one where I ranted about my awful day.  This is just for discussing today's generation in general.

As for your points, I see and can agree with most of what you say. However, these young teenagers need to realize that they are still not -adults-.  If the term adults is what catches you, then let's forget that aspect.

The school staff are their ELDERS.  I'm an adult, but I still recognize that I should treat my elders with respect and I should recognize the fact that they have wisdom to offer.

I think a lot of kids struggle to realize the fine line which separates them from adulthood.  I -do- treat my students like adults intellectually and in many other senses.

I guess I'm just afraid that these kids won't -mature- out of their bad attitudes and outlooks on life.  And I have this fear because I've also interacted with a young of 'fresh' adults, or even adults around my age, who have the same behaviors and conceptions.

That how just my other classmate are. Just plain rude, and try to act like an adult. Most of kids in the United States don't care about school. Dude you are lucky just to have school with this type of education and equipment. I swear that kids just get worse and worse as the year past by. Respect the teachers they are there for you.

From the profile to the thread lol.  I personally believe that most of today's youth is more concerned with fitting in with the group, that they don't take the time to actually comprehend their upbringing.  The Morality level is at an all time low.  I am deeply concerned.  I do believe that this type of corruption will continue if government continues to put stipulations on how a parent can punish their child.

I agree that High School students are not adults yet. And your right to worry as the class of 2011 (my class) and the class of 2012 are already showing signs of immaturity and bad attitudes (not all of them). I'll agree to leave the arguement about what classifies as an adult as that is a bit complex; so we'll call High School students young adults. The school staff are their Elders like you said, sometimes we have elders we like (like my Government teacher/Chemistry teacher to give an example) and some we don't like (my English teacher/my English teacher again lol); its a lot like home; we have some family memebers we like, some we don't. But to us young adults we don't tend to see it that way; we see teachers as someone whose job is to teach us. They don't care if we don't learn the material (I've had a couple who have told us too are faces and I hope to get your opinion as a teacher about my sentence); they get paid either way (thou if the grades are terrible they lose funding from the government). My guess is that both the teachers must make an attempt to teach these kids in way that they can both learn the material without it being to hard or confusing (not to mention boring) and a strong home life as parents must also make sure that their kids are doing their homework, studying, and not screwing up their life.

mr.pace : Sorry.  It was just that kind of a day. I'm still sitting here at 9pm feeling the effects of it, and sometimes I just HAVE to rant about it.
I agree with ALL you have said. I think government stepping in over a parent's punishment to a child is....unfathomable.  The government has no right or place to tell parents how to raise their children, and it's quite infuriating that they think they can.  But I suppose that might be off topi slightly....?

Oldschool41 :  I can agree with you on the teacher aspect, at least.  I have very strong opinions about teaching, and there are far too many out there that need to be kicked out of the classroom. They're part o the problem.

And yes, parents too have a large part to play in it.  Perhaps I should complain more about the parents and how they are raising their children (or not raising them!).

Except that we run into a problem as well. Parents don't want to hear you tell them that your a bad parent and that they should get more involved in their kids life. They don't want to hear it but frankly its true.

Oldschool41 : Well, of course there are teachers and parents who DO do their jobs.  They would have every right to be upset about such claims, but given those around them, can they really blame us for our opinions?

No they shouldn't if anything they should respect your opinion and at least hear you out before deciding whether to shut you out completely. But off couse people are Ignorant and unless its about us, we don't care (which of course is a problem) and even then when it is about us; we become so prideful that we don't need to change as we consider ourself "the perfect person."

Today my high school generations is good in almost everything the only thing they are bad in is sports. Our football team has lost all of there games this year which has me furious right now. They even lost our homecoming game.
