Cowabunga dudes! Every one's favorite Mutated Teen aged Turtles are here in the third installment of the Ninja Turtles games. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project is my favorite Turtles game ever released , and is one of the greatest beat 'em up titles ever created. New York City is under attack by none other than the notorious shred-head and its up to you to stop him!
In this game you get to choose between playing any of the 4 Ninja Turtles just like the previous title, but this game adds a new improvement in that each turtle now has his own unique special attack. This adds a new element , giving each turtle their own play-style and leaving you to enjoy your favorite. It is my opinion and experience that this game is slightly easier than #2 making it a little more enjoyable and less frustrating and allowing even the more casual gamer to get far into the game.
Graphics: 9
This game has good graphics for a NES game, the details are good and it is easy to distinguish each character. I think that is where the graphics of the game really shine, you can tell immediately who each boss is if you have a previous knowledge of the Turtles. Another thing this game does very well is incorporating the background into the game. That seemingly innocent man-hole suddenly has a foot soldier burst forth, or from that glass window behind you.
Sound: 9
The sound is done well in this game, it provides the famous Ninja Turtles theme song in the retro 8bit quality. The rest of the music in the game is good, it's not so repetitive that it gets old or annoying. It's also not extremely loud which I feel can take away from a games sound effects or even the atmosphere of the game.
Addictiveness: 9
This game is highly addictive , especially to Ninja Turtles fans who finally would like to experience what it's like to be their favorite super hero! The game can take practice and to actually defeat the entire game , would be very difficult on a first time ever run through. The game also allows the ability to compete for high score here on vizzed, so even if you manage to beat the game you can still replay it to improve your score.
Story: 7
What's more creative than a mutated rat raising 4 mutated Turtles to become Ninjas by their teen aged years. The story of the Ninja Turtles is a classic. The games story revolves around Manhattan being under attack by Shredder and the Turtles needing to stop him.
Depth: 8
Beating the game requires experience and I think it would take most people at least a few trys before they were able to actually complete the game to the end. Once you were able to actually complete the game , it still offers you the ability to beat it with 3 other Turtles, or also try to better your high score. The game does also support multiplayer offering endless hours of fun with your buddy's.
Difficulty: 7
The games difficulty hits that just perfect point of being not too easy and not too hard. First time players probably wont complete the game on their first try, but they will get far enough that it will be fun and they will want to play again to try to get further. You can unlock an easy mode difficulty but it requires a cheat code to enable it.
Overall: 8.8
I score this game an 8.8/10 , using the graphics, sound, addictiveness and depth category's average. Anyone that is a fan of the classic beat 'em up side scroller genre this game is for you. For people who are not fans of the Ninja Turtles this game is quality enough that its worth playing on its own merits. People who are fans, this game is a must play. One of the greatest features of the game is seeing and defeating all your favorite Turtles villains, from the minions; such as the foot soldiers and mousers to the bosses including of course Rocksteady, Beebop , and Shredder, among many more iconic villains.
So go grab a pizza with everything on it (no anchovies !!) call your buddy's over , and try a run through of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: The Manhattan Project.
