In 1991 Sega released Sonic the Hedgehog for the Genesis, which destroyed Nintendo for a while. It had two ports, one for the Game Gear and one for the Master System. I am reviewing the Master System version today, so keep reading to find out more about this game.

GAMEPLAY B+: Sadly the gameplay is not a good as the original, but its still fun. Time will go by as you collect  rings, smash robots, and hunt for chaos emeralds. That's right, you have to look for the chaos emeralds making your job a lot harder. However it does not require to much effort to find them.

GRAPHICS B: Although they could use a little more detail the graphics still capture the spirit of the original fairly well. The backgrounds could definitely use some work. Some of them have only 2 colors in them. :O

SOUND B: Like the graphics, the sound could use a little bit of work too. The songs in the game are very simple but they got me back into humming them so they are really catchy.

ADDICTIVENESS C-: I would not play this game for very long, it does not have the exciting action packed gameplay as the original. I beat the game and never touched it again.

DEPTH A-: For an 8-bit game, there is a lot in one cartridge. There are 6 zones with 3 acts in each of them. The zones seem to have a certain theme for every 2 of them. For instance, green hill zone and bridge zone have similar themes.

DIFFICULTY MEDIUM EASY: This game is a little harder than the Game Gear port but not as hard as the original.

OVERALL RATING B
The game is not bad, I recommend the original but if you had a Master System back in the day and not a Genesis. Then this would be an excellent choice.

FUTURE REVIEWS:
Sonic 2 Game Gear and Master System.
Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog.

G@mehe@d : I have played the Sega Game Gear version of Sonic The Hedgehog and it is ok but not perfect. If I played the Sega Master System version of Sonic The Hedgehog, than it would be the exact same version as the Sega Game Gear version because the Sega Game Gear has the same CPU as the Sega Master System and it is just basically a Handheld version of the Sega Master System. The Sega Genesis version of Sonic The Hedgehog is the best version because the Sega Genesis is a lot more powerful than the Sega Game Gear and the Sega Master System. The Sega Genesis is 16 bit and the Sega Game and the Sega Master System are 8 bit. You did a great job on the Review and I am looking forward to your Review for Sonic The Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Game Gear and the Sega Master System and your Review for Knuckles in Sonic The Hedgehog.

Of course the Master System version is not as good as the Genesis, but what it does is showcase the technical superiority of the Master System over the NES. Can you imagine Sonic on the NES? Not really. I've always thought the Master System was superior to the NES in its capabilities, though not in its overall play experience. Titles like Sonic are a historical curiosity mostly, there's not a whole lot of reason to play it when it's on the Genesis and better there. But props to Sega for managing to get that "blast processing" to work in 8 bit!

AdMan : I'm talking about when it comes to gameplay. That does not mean I prefer better looking games though. I do believe you that it does show off the Master Systems technical capabilities but Sonic 2 on that system looks far better in fact I just did a review on Sonic 2 for the Master System.
