Well that's the question
I'm asking that if you have a cartridge of (for example) Mario rpg the blablabla of the seven stars (which I own) and I download a Rom of the game it is legal?
Like some kind of... backup or something??

Yeah its legal. There's nothing illegal about downloading the roms while you own the game for yourself in the first place. As far as I know.

Downloading ROMS is illegal no matter what, whether you own it or not. If you own it legally in physical form, that's what you should play. You don't get to have a back up on the computer that you didn't buy, that's illegal, whether you owned it or not. Your 'back up' is going to the pawn shop and buying another copy.

Which isn't to say I disapprove of ROMS, because I use them and I don't care either way. I'm not really the butthurt type, you understand. But you should know that it is illegal plain out, and owning it in person doesn't change anything.

As KG said, ROMS are illegal whether you own a legitimate copy of the game or not. And Nintendo even has an FAQ regarding ROMS and emulators. That said, you really don't have to worry about the feds knocking on your door because you downloaded a copy of an SNES game.

In addition to what KG and Sox said, there actually is a legal way to download ROMs, but you're not going to like it...

Nintendo (And many other publishers) have released numerous games for Nintendo's Virtual Console system, which are ROMs running on emulators. And these are completely legal. There are also some ROMs available for download on your PC. I know that Sega is very fond of releasing what they used to call "Smash Packs". Look on Steam under Sega. There's a metric tonne of games. But again, you have to pay for them.

And there is one other time that downloading a ROM is legal. And that is when it's a completely original game made for an old system. Believe it or not, there are a few games out there that exist completely free of any other code, images, sound effects, or anything, that were made for the SNES, Genesis, and many others after those consoles were done with. You should look into them.

ROMS in general are bad and can be riddled with viruses, it's ideal to just buy the physical copy of the game. Even if the ROM is of you game you own, it's not worth the risk, just play the physical game. That's just my opinion though and I'm a hypocrite since I play games in the RGR XD
