I'm a newbie as well, but from my understanding, trusted people can give out trusted points.  They do it for various reasons...such as you being polite to members of the staff, helping others out, or just being a nice person in general.

As far as friending other people, you need to go to their profile.  Under that ad to the left of all their stats should be a big green link that says "Add to Friends List".  If you know who you want to add, you can also go to the very top of the page and click on "Control Panel".  Then to the left is a link that says "Friends List", and from there you get a box to type in their name.

If I'm wrong on anything, someone will correct me soon I'm sure.  In any case, welcome to vizzed!
