So... with the lock out going on this long, I am actually surprised that they haven't just cancelled the entire season. At this point is it even possible to have one?

Elara : In reality, there won't be a season, because both sides are so greedy. But if there would magically be a season, and they came to an agreement today, they would have to do basically what the NBA did last year. They would have to squeeze some games into a smaller amount of time. This might be the only option if more games get canceled though.

In reality, there won't be a season, because both sides are so greedy. If they even want to have a season at all they need to come to an agreement quick. Even if they come to an agreement they would have to squeeze games in into a lot less time.

Now I can say that there will not be a season, its January 3rd and nothing has been said even discussing an agreement, so I am thinking it will not even happen at all.

In the NHL, apparently both sides have agreed to "framework" on a new CBA. So basically there will be a season, unless something were to come up. It seems like the remaining stuff is more on the legal side. So if it goes through, it will be at least another eight years until negotiations would start again, with an option for two more years after that. Here's the link to the story on NHL.com

Despite their best efforts of trying to bankrupt the league (AGAIN) It sounds like they have finally stopped their BS and are going to have a shortened season. Although irritated I can't help but being excited to watch some Blackhawks hockey. It really helps me get through the later winter months watching some great hockey! Go Hawks!

Alright lets go Penguins!!

What I don't get is why the players union decided that a drop from 57% of revenue to an even 50-50 share with owners. Would have thought they would have wanted more.

Oldschool41 : what good is a 57-43 split if no one is playing?

I'm just glad they finally got a deal done.

Maybe next time around they will start negotiating a bit earlier than 3 weeks before the CBA expires. Not that it will accomplish much but it would be nice to at least make it seem like they tried BEFORE and not 4-5 months after.

It sounds like there won't non-conference games in the shortened season which will make things interesting come Cup time.

As far as the negotiations go neither side really had the intent on being professional. This was way worse than any other lockout that I have seen over the years (Minus the strike in 94 of baseball) What' worse is that the NHL feels like they can get away with doing this every few years even though the sport is dying in a lot of their cities.

Jordanv78 : you call it dying, I say that they should never have expanded after they hit 24 teams. I think 24 is the only sustainable number for the NHL. They don't have the TV ratings that the NFL or MLB do so they don't make enough money that way.

Get rid of the bottom 6 teams that are bleeding money and then rearrange the league so the East/West groupings are good and go with that. You can't force a sport into a market that doesn't want it.

Well, maybe with 24 teams that would be better, but if there wasn't a lockout every few years, it wouldn't be this bad. I think with NBC Sports broadcasting so much hockey, it really helped the rating for the playoffs. And I would have thought that this year would have been even better, that is, if there wasn't a lockout.

geeogree : Oh trust me I agree with what you are saying. What I'm getting at is the fact that the sport is struggling in those towns to begin with and the way NOT TO HELP them succeed is by continuously doing crap like this. Obviously neither side wants contraction yet they still do things like this that only hurts the league. That's basically what I'm getting at.

patar4097 : true. And hopefully with the length of this CBA the people who were involved in this one will be mostly gone (except for some of the younger players) and so maybe the animosity will be less.

Elpizo : I've heard between 48-50 games with no games between conferences. Yeah it'll suck to not have as many games but at least we get some hockey. It would be worse to miss the entire season.

I'm sad it took so long for them to come to an agreement, but I'm glad it finally happened. At least there will be some season. I think 24 is a good number. I would wonder who they'd kick though. Go Canucks!!!!

For the teams that would leave, I would think, obviously, number one is the Coyotes. And the Islanders would be second on my list, but they just announced that they will stick around. Next up would be one of the Florida teams, but I don't know which one should stay. Then maybe Nashvile or something. Personally, I like that there are 30 teams, but if hey were to get rid of some, I would only get rid of 2, so the 4 conference thing would be more fair. What ever happened with that anyway?

patar4097 : The Player's union vetoed the idea.

But yeah... the day they announced the end of the lockout, it seemed EVERYONE around here busted out the Penguins gear. It was a nice sight to see.

geeogree : I also hope they start sooner than 3 weeks before the next expiration date. Honestly, with how much they fight, they should start laying the groundwork now.
