I've seen a fair deal of them pop up, and the globals took to talking about the idea.

We've chosen to allow them, but have a strict set of rules. If you do not follow the rules you WILL be banned. The purpose of the "What do you think about me threads" is to allow a user who needs feedback to get it, not to gang up and bully/flame a user you may not like. Be honest. Do not be unusually cruel.

Now for these rules...

1. Opinions good and bad are fine.
2. Flaming is not. Do not just be cruel for the sake of being cruel.
3. Do not troll others with your own threads.
4. One thread, per person, per life.
5. Any and all complaints to be sent to the global moderators. (us as a whole via the PM Box, NOT OUR INDIVIDUAL BOXES. Do NOT ask YourMajestyKen. Do NOT ask legacyme3, etc etc etc.)

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY

6. You MUST ask the Global Moderators for the ability to have a thread. This is to prevent a bunch of no name users making them, and ultimately spamming the board. The only people who should get one are members who are genuinely seeking feedback on their status as a member, and have a need for feedback (IE - YourMajestyKen, myself, geeogree, a user who only uses the RGR, and newbies will not get threads.)

To be fair to EVERYONE, we will be closing all current "What do you think about me?" threads. If you wish to have one still, you must ask the global moderators for permission to reopen your thread.

That is all.

Since the Seishiro Leonhart's thread, a lot of similar threads made by Random people started to appear.

Been gone for a little while, and that kind of thread seems to annoy me. Clearly the goal is a little ego stroking, but it seems like it could easily turn into a situation where a lesser liked member makes a thread, the chat room Tunnel Snakes catch wind of it, and the member is humiliated and demoralized. As much as "No Flaming, No Spamming" is drilled into the members' heads, it always happens regardless. :|

I guess in that case, you can't really blame the system, so people will have to be aware that by making those kinds of threads, they're opening themselves up to whatever people want to say. Either way, I wouldn't want them turning into Comedy Central roasts, and it seems stupid for them to turn into lovefests where everyone compliments the popular user. Ugh, gag me

I think the better way to do it would be to make a "what do you think about me thread". Just say your thoughts on the user above, and be open to hearing what someone else has to say about you. It "limits dosage" so to speak, and prevents several members from ganging up on one person.



Altogether though, I don't get why people need to be told what others think about them. It's a small Internet community, not a dating site.

The only users being approved for these threads are the ones that actually could USE the feedback. As such, we are preventing ego stroking.

Any flaming will be punished, no matter WHO it is. If it's a mod, they will lose their mod spot possibly. If it's a user, they will be banned. If it's an elite, they will lose elite status.

If they don't like it, tough.

Honestly I don't see the need for the threads and really the only thing In my opinion that will come of them is a lot of hurt feelings. I have no interest in reading them nor participating in posting in any.

What qualifies a person for "needing feedback"?

People who are sad? Oh well
People who aren't sure if they're spamming? Ask a mod
People who think they might be being a jerk lately? If they have to ask, probably

Honestly, I can't even think of a reason somebody would NEED one of these threads.

I kid, bruvah, but I guess I see your point. I just have trouble understanding how the thread would benefit the user more than it would hurt. If they aren't well liked, they'll more than likely be told so. Are they asking for popularity help, or do they just want to hear how much everyone hates them? How masochistic.

Generally if a user is poorly received by the community, it takes a lot for the regulars on the board and in chat to change their minds or views about said member. Hopefully people are too intimidated by the fact that they have to have permission for it. From the Big Bad Globals, no less.

I don't think these rules have changed, so I'll sticky this for now. This was kinda tough to hunt down for me and I knew what to look for. It also seems to have become relevant. I'll edit it if it turns out these threads are just not allowed at all anymore.
