I've been working out like crazy over the last few years and I still do seem to get any larger.  How long does it take to get the results that I want?

It depends on your work out routine. If you've been working out for over a year you should see some sort change in your body, even if it's not the one you're looking for. When I started working out, I wanted to increase my upper body strength, so I started lifting free weights, doing pushups and, since I couldn't do any pull-ups, I did inverted pull-ups. I started curling 20 pound weights and at first I could only do sets of about 10. After about a week I was able to do sets of up to 50, and so I added more weight. I continued just doing sets of 50 reps at 25 pounds, because I didn't really want to get huge, just stronger. After about a month of just doing two or three sets of 10 pushups a day, I went from barely squeeking out 20 at a time, to over 40.

But that's just me. You say you want to get "larger" but what exactly do you mean? Bigger chest? What is your daily (Yes daily!) work out routine?

Lazlo Falconi :   Yes I wish to have and larger chest and larger biceps.  My daily work out routine is:  bench press from 115 to 205 decreasing reps as I go.  Pushups.  Dumbbell press 60lbs two sets of 10.  Straight bar curl 75lbs three sets of ten.  Dumbbell curl 35lbs until I get tired usually somewhere around 30 to 50.  Pullups 3 sets of 10.  Incline Bench press.

What are you eating? You might be just burning off all of the calories and protein that you ingest with that routine. Do you drink any of that muscle milk stuff? That will also help—but don't go overboard, it just helps you get the protein you need to build muscle.

Lazlo Falconi :   I'm a large eater.  I eat anywhere from 3 to 9 meals a day and sometimes more.  I do use whey protein on occasion. I do run and roller skate a lot though.

It's not about how much you work out, but rather how much you put into how you work out....

I'm not saying you need to bench 700 pounds at once. That's not what I mean.

If you think lifting 300 pounds 7 times a day will do a ton, it probably won't. Honestly, doing 100 pounds 50 times will get you better results.

Working out is about repetition and sustaining the workout over a period of time.

You should do it every day or every couple days. Lifting weights once a week won't do a whole lot.

I dunno what else it could be... you should be seeing improvement.

legacyme3 : I try to do lots of repeations espeacially when I was in wieght lifting class, but I just don't seem to see results.  I my greatest increase was was going from 137lbs to 140lbs(body weight) during a nine course.  I used to work out daily, but I just don't seem to get any larger.

legacyme3 : You're sort of right. Lifting less weight, but more reps will increase strength, but if you just want to look bigger, you need more weight.
