Ok, im sick of explaning this to people, so heres a walkthrough on setting up xchat (http://www.xchat.org windows 30 day trial, or http://www.silverex.org/download/ modded xchat (LEGAL!)) client. (Or the use-at-own-risk version that may not be legal.

Step 1.

Launch xchat and goto "XChat -> Network List", this will open the network list box.

Step 2.

Fill in your nickname (one displayed in chat) and various other names, mine an see layed out as above.
Press the add button to add a new server to the server list. I removed all the default ones because I dont need/use them.. you may want to do the same.

With the newly created server click it to rename it to "Vizzed" or "GBATemp" (irc server is on GBATemp.net), then with it selected press the edit button.

Step 3.

Fill in the IRC server name as I have done, including the /5190.
Select the auto connect checkbox.
In the favourites channel box, write "#vizzed" and any other channels you may want to chat in, such as #gbatemp.net or #insaneparadox. (for multiple channels, sperate with commas, and no spaces "#vizzed,#gbatemp.net,#insaneparadox".

If you have got a password on this server, you can put it in the nickserv password box.

Clicking close, then connect on the previous channel, you should be brought into the vizzed IRC chatroom, kindly hosted by GBATemp.net.

Now your in chat, you may want to register your nick name.
In the chat box, write this, replacing and with your details
/ns register
You should get a confirmation message now. Go back into the nickserv password box as mentioned above and input your password.

Closing down xchat, and starting it again, it should auto log you in to vizzed irc chat room, aswell as identify your name automaticly for you!!

Whats with this password thing?
Without registering your nickname, anyone can use it. So by registering it, only you can use it, logging you in with your password so you are identified.

Is it my vizzed password?
Nope, its any password you pick.

Step 4:

Once you are connecting your probably feeling pretty please with your self, but the job is only half done! Now you must select a Nick, this is the name all people on IRC will identify you with. So choose wisely (in most cases, matching it to your Vizzed username would be best.)

Now im going to show you how to register THAT nick on the server.

Following BigBob85's instructions you should have already put your Vizzed Username (or other selected Nick) in the User Information. So connect to #Vizzed. (You can change your nick name at any time, but its better to change your default nick name in the Network List: User Information area)

To register you type

/msg NickServ REGISTER {Enter Your Password} {Enter Your Email}
Example:
/msg NickServ REGISTER passwordgoeshere email@address.com

dont add the "{" or the "}"

Now, whatever you had chosen for your password, to make things easy, should be put in the program to automatically identify you when you connect.

Go to Step 3 of BigBob85's instructions and under "Nickserv Password" add your password.

Now, if for some reason you change your nick, and then change it BACK to your original you will need to identify with NickServ that you are the owner of that Nick.

/msg NickServ IDENTIFY {password}
Example:
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY passwordgoeshere

Identify

That will prevent NickServ from changing your nick as a protective measure, to prevent other from using your Nick (even you if you dont IDENTIFY with NickServ)

There are several other things you can do later such as Grouping Nicks or Dropping Nicks from the server. But for now, the basics will do.

I hope that helps, in the future i will show Grouping, Dropping and Ghosting.

Step 5:

The next installment in your Vizzed IRC Tutorial's is Nick Grouping. This feature won't be for everyone for example, Geeogree prefers to keep his name as "Geeogree" all the time no matter what he is doing.

I approach this in a different and slightly strange manner, i select a letter from what i am doing and apply it to my name in squared brackets. Find below the nick names i have grouped.

The names are self explanatory. The best thing of this is, if i change nick i don't have to re-identify. Meaning i can swap between all 6 names as much as i want without /msg NickServ IDENTIFY email@address.com passwordgoeshere, and this is why.

To register you have to first have a registered nick (following the first 4 steps will ensure this).
Type,
/nick {Selected Nick Name}
/nick RandomNicker

so to group this with your other Nick you do this:
/msg NickServ GROUP {Original Nick Name} {Original Nick's Password}
/msg NickServ GROUP IceWave04 passwordgoeshere

giving you the following confirmation message.

Now when you swap between either of those two nicks you will remain identified, this also registers the new one meaning only you can use it. This beats have 10 different nicks, and have to identify every time you use one.

Now to view nicks in your group list you type
/msg NickServ glist

And this will now be the result!

Yet to come in IRC Tutorials is Dropping and Ghosting.
