CERN announced yesterday that they finally found a new subatomic particle that is what scientists call the Higgs Boson. This is sometimes known as the "god particle" because this is a missing component to the current Standard Model of what our universe is made of and it not only can explain the problem of mass, but also it might possibly give us more insight to other areas in the universe that we might not know about, like this could maybe give us more insight on how gravity is related to the Standard Model.

Anyone as excited about this discovery as I am?

I'd be more excited if the media would stop calling it "the god particle", because that doesn't really describe it very well, and it's just bad reporting. Anyway, last I heard, they had discovered a new particle, and knew it was a boson, but they weren't sure if it was the Higgs. Glad to see that's been confirmed now!

This is a very interesting discovery, hopefully it allows us to get an even more indepth grasp of knowledge about our universe. Like Lazlo, I wish people would stop calling it "the god particle". Perhaps I am just unaware of previous claims of God being a particle...

I watched a few videos in an attempted to get a basic understanding of the Higgs Boson. I am still scratching my head over this, but seeing how much of a buzz it appears to be creating leaves me optimistic and curious as to what this could lead to. Just going to have to wait and see for now --ironically I am taking an introductory chemistry class this summer.

play4fun : I understand that people aren't claiming these bosons to be God himself. That bit was slightly sarcastic.  What I don't understand is why people call it the "God particle" to begin with. Lets , for a second, pretend God actually does exist and created everything, like claims of him suggest. ALL particles would then be "God particles" would they not? Or is this just different because it played a fundamental role in how our universe was formed.

In general I have issues with people taking modern ideas/discoveries and attributing them to a completely different (ancient) account of events. When ever a religious person talks about things like evolution being instituted by God they sound like this to me. "Evolution completely contradicts what the Bible (aka God) says about creation, but evolution exists therefore God did it"

This is exactly how I feel about the Higgs Boson being called the God particle too.

I grabbed this qoute from wikipedia, sorry the link to the source requires me to register and login to read it. "Higgs, an atheist himself, is displeased that the Higgs particle is nicknamed the "God particle", because the term "might offend people who are religious"." What a nice guy he is.

smotpoker86 :

The name the "god particle" comes from the name of a book written by Leon Lederman. In the preface he says it was something he said in a speech and he used it as the working title, since he was assured the publishers never stick with the working title. He also said this, "The title ended up offending two groups: 1) those who believe in God and 2) those who do not. We were warmly received by those in the middle."

soxfan849 : Haha definetly not what I was expecting on why its called the God particle. Just as long as religious people take as much offense to the name as I do than I am ok with it.

Like just about everyone else, I do not feel calling bosons 'the god particle' is a very wide idea. First of all, it comes off very pretentious and presumptuous of the media (notice I say the media, not the scientific community. I highly doubt any scientist of reasonable standing would dare be so bold.) Second, it is almost as if skeptics of the existence of God are thumbing their nose at the religious community. That is just plain wrong on a moral level, if nothing else.

That said, I am excited, if not a little trepidacious about this discovery. While knowing more about bosons could definitely lead to a deeper understanding of the universe and how we came to be, I shudder to think of the potential military application. They theorize that these particles were what caused the Big Bang. If this is indeed the case, and further study allows them to recreate a 'Big Bang' on a smaller scale and then find a way to harness that force, the sheer destructive power of the ensuing weapon would be terrifying to say the least.

I know what is most desired by man: power and control. It is basic human nature to thirst for as much of each as one can get. Such a catastrophic weapon would be highly coveted by those wishing to gain more power and control. Putting that kind of potential into the hands of greedy men is easily the scariest idea I could ever think of.

Ladies and gentlemen, if the theories surrounding these boson particles are true, then we stand at a precipice of an new chapter, both exciting and terrifying, in the history of humanity. Truly the dawning of a new age.

PoorSmeagol83 : From what I understand (which isnt very much to be honest) Higgs predicted these boson's are a result of the big bang and not the other way around. Well they are a result of the Higgs Field which is a result of the big bang. I could have that wrong but thats the way I interpreted it.

It may be possible to kind of reverse engineer it so to speak , but I think that would be very far off as they have just observed it. That is a very scarey thought tho. They were talking about accidently creating a black hole when CERN was kicking off, but the thought of them creating a big bang is MUCH worse lol.

Also, I'm sure theists would react similarly if this boson was called "the non-existent god particle". Just sayin.
