I heard about it from someone who lives in NSW. Hopefully everything's alright. He seemed concerned but was fine so far.

Man, I know a lot of Aussies online...

What people dont understand about these kinds of fires is, its not a matter of doing stuff, then leaving when the firefront gets close, theres litraly no time. On saturday the firefront was moving upto 100km/h (about 65 mph), so by the time you realize, its there, its too late.

As some of the reports say, its like a fireball just moving along. The town of marysville was wiped out in a matter of minutes, and no amount of protection they had could have saved them, not even 10 fire tankers and arial bombers.

Listening to the radio, they put out alerts to some towns saying there is no escape now, your MUST stay and fight the fire. A rather large town, king lake, was surrounded by fire on all sides with it closing in, they managed to hold it off though, and make a break in the fire to get ambulances in and evacuate people out. Still lots of lives lost there though.

There were massive fires here a few years back some lady burnt a love letter and turned out to be the biggest fire here costing millions in damage. Also can't forget Yellowstone's fire, now they got a bunch of naked trees cause of it. Now Yahoo is saying someone did this one on purpose to mass murder people so wonder where this will end up Each fire has an interesting beginning. If someone did do this I hope we can light him or her on fire as there punishment

A quick google of area burnt and stuff and here some figures.

330,000 hectares have been burnt.
that = 616682 US NFL football fields. Calculations Page

Yellowstone fires in the US was 793,000 acres, this is 815,000 acres.

2 major blazes may join making the firefront over 100km (about 65 miles) accross.

Also, in an ironic twist, another state in Australia (Queensland), 1500km north (about 900 miles) is having flood problems..

Fires/wind is going away from me, so we dont notice it.

EDIT: Update.
181 confirmed dead, 1000+ houses lost.

RedCross appeal has raised $50+ million, and will keep raising more.

They expect there to be 300+ dead by the time they counted all the bodys and identified them, fires are still burning.
