I'm making this thread after talking with [[REDACTED]] about cutting for a few hours in chat, which brought up the question of how many other vizzed users have cut themselves in the past or do right now.

I guess I need a real point to the thread, so: Have you ever cut yourself? If you have, can you share stories as to what/who caused you to? Or maybe times you went too far? Just generally curious...

Yes i have cut myself before. For reasons that i would rather not go into, Let's just say i wasn't in a fit state of mind. I didn't cut myself to kill myself only to release the burden of abuse and get a sense of euphoria... (yeah i was pretty screwed up).

do i regret it? No.
Did i do it for a cry of attention? No i covered up my wound by wearing long sleeve tops and jumpers all the time.
How did it feel? It felt like all the things in the world didn't matter anymore and that at the end of every dark tunnel there is light.

Meh we all have different ways of coping.

I never cut myself in my life. Only cuts I get usually come from activities like playing sports (technically scrapes but eh...) work, and when fooling around sharp equipment. Other than that, never going to cut myself

I've got a bunch of cuts before. I got some two days ago when I fell off my bike. I saw my friend, I was excited and BOOM! I fell off my bike and I did a 360 land. It hurt and I got some bruises, and some injuries. I also got some little cute. It hurt a lot.

Well, I did cut myself one time though. It was just a paper cut though. It did hurt a little bit.

I have not ever cut myself. At least not on purpose.

I don't see the point of it. Pain doesn't make other pain go away, all you get is more pain.

I don't like pain. Pain adding to more pain sounds painful.

To keep it as simple as possible, no, I don't cut myself. It would be pretty stupid if I did, since I've logically reasoned there is no point to it.

I have never intentionally cut myself nor will I ever attempt to, I am afraid of sharp objects coming towards my skin and I hate the sight of blood. I am against cutting to solve emotional problems and I Find it very disturbing.

Just for future reference, I don't think the user you mentioned in your first post would have a problem with it, but I removed their name just in case. It is probably best to avoid letting personal issues like this into the limelight, unless that user posts it themselves.

ParagonNova : Why yes, I would be happy to share my experiences with you.

Ahem. Elara story time.

I was a cutter for a very long time (1998-2003ish). My reasons were varied, but boiled down to the same general reason: it was a distraction from the emotional distress that I was experiencing. It took many forms, early on it was digging my nails into my arms until it drew blood (I have long nails), or catching it at an angle to just slice. Once I used a pair of school scissors just so see if they were capable (don't try this at home, kids)

High school was when I got my hands on actual blades, mostly an exacto knife with several replacement blades. I'd slice my forearms, mostly on the sides of my wrists because they were easy to hide, or my upper arms which were hid by short sleeve shirts. I tried on my stomach but it wasn't as effective, and once I did it on my leg... but that was actually for a school project (I needed blood for a replica of the Holocaust-era Star of David badge).

The secondary reason I cut was for the experience. Pain felt interesting, and blood looked pretty. I was also intrigued because I didn't really bleed much... which ties into my one story of sorta going too far. I had a bad breakup, I was really upset, so I did my thing... sliced the heck out of my arms, but it only bled enough to scab. I wanted actual blood, so for one of them I kept going over it until it actually bled. I wasn't really able to hide all that the next day, and I couldn't come up with a good lie, so I was called into the counselor's office, they called my parents and I had to go to a behavioural therapist. It was a waste of time since he wasn't a very good one, and I went on my merry way.

It wasn't until I got to college that I finally stopped cutting. My friends always got so upset with me, threatened to cut themselves to make me see how they felt, etc etc... but none of that really does anything when you have the mindset. What finally did it was hitting a point where I felt emotionally numb... couldn't cry, couldn't feel anything. I cut then to prove to myself I still felt... and after awhile the numbness went away. The next time I got really upset, I stopped with the knife in my hand as I ad the realization that all I was doing was adding physical pain to the emotional one. Yes, it distracted for a bit, but the pain always came back... always.

Do I still feel the need to cut sometimes? Yes, but generally I can shrug it off. Do I regret it? A bit, yeah... more because of the scars than anything else... I mean, it is a part of me and who I am so I can't really be ashamed of it... but I have somewhere around 60 scars in various degrees of visibility.

I have not cut myself, but I have a friend who had.  He was upset about how he lost his girlfriend, so he went and cut himself for about a week, but got over it and is now fine.

Well, I never had, never will.
I used to snap one of my own fingers once, but I'm past that, I don't think I could get anything out of cutting...
I cannot associate relief or emotional "numbness" to that action.

I'm sorry to hear what some of the people went through here...
I hope those who do, can move on from it eventually.
My best regards to you people.

I had a friend who used to cut herself. she told me physical pain is easier to deal with than emotional pain.
I understood what she was going through, but whenever i saw new cuts it really hurt me seeing her do that.

I know a handful of people that has cut themselves intentionally, but for myself, I have not.
Pain on top of emotional pain is meaningless. I did have emotional pain in the past, but never went out of my way to do so.

I've never cut myself. When I'm in emotional pain, my usual solution is to sleep. Sometimes I bite my nails down until it hurts (although it doesn't hurt very much) in order to calm myself down, but I've never hurt myself more than that or had the urge to do something else. In the end I think I'm too terrified to cut myself.

I had a close friend who self-harmed. At the time I was young and I didn't know how to deal with it, how to reach out to her, or what to say. It hurt me to see my friend like that, and I also felt helpless because I didn't know how to convince her to stop, and I also felt there was nothign I could have done to make her suffering lessen. Overall it was a horrible situation. Thankfully she doesn't do it anymore.

I'm sad to say that I have.  That being said, it wasn't SERIOUS cutting.  During the worst and most senseless part of my life, I was crying out for attention from ANYONE that I could.  I had been kicked out of my parent's house, been forced to live in a dorm, and had a sucky, jerky boyfriend.  I didn't feel like he loved me, though I didn't know how to voice those thoughts, and I wanted him to see the pain I was in and help me through it.  So I'd occasionally start cutting myself (lightly) with glass.  It was only deep enough to bleed, like a paper cut, but enough to gather attention.

I'd take my time scratching with the glass very carefully so I'd only break the surface of my skin.

It's probably the thing I second most regret in my life, and I feel so utterly stupid that I tried to get attention in that manner.  (And get this, it didn't even work!)

I only bite myself on the arm when I get EXTREMELY angry and/or frustrated. It usually works as a good means to calm me down.

It's extremely rare if I have to bite myself as I'm usually calm. And it's never too hard that I bleed or anything. Leaves a few teeth marks in my arm for a few minutes but usually cleans up after.

I had a friend who kept cutting himself all the time. And not even for any emotional reason. He just literally liked the pain. I'm not friends with him anymore but I think he literally became an 'Emo'.

It's funny how many people posted on this not understanding the question.  LOL.

I've never had an actual problem with these things but I do have a best friend that used to cut and burn himself every time he got really drunk.  He didn't just do it a little bit either.  He would mutilate his whole upper body.  To this day he's covered in scars.  His pain tolerance was amazing too.  He could hold a lighter on his arm literally forever..  until he just didn't feel like burning himself anymore.  On his one arm he has a burn scar that's larger than a baseball.

I actually did this with him occasionally years ago.  As crazy as it sounds when I was there we kind of did it for fun and as a contest to see who's pain tolerance was higher (he always won).  I have a few scars from those days but nothing major.  Like I said, I've never had a problem with it.  I've never done it alone, only around others.

I don't recommend it either.  If you don't at least have a serious problem with it, don't do it for no reason like I did.  That's just stupid (even though my scars look cool).
