When a politician and their respective party runs in an election, they tend make many promises that will sway the votes in their direction. In the 2010 Australian Federal election PM Julia Gillard promised that Internet would be faster and to be accessed by all Australians, there would be a substantial increase to pensions such as the carer pension, and of her most famous promise that turned out to be the biggest lie I have heard from a politician, "THERE WILL BE NO CARBON TAX UNDER A GOVERNMENT I LEAD"". The carbon tax begins on July 1, or as many Australians now call it Juliar Day. If we break a contract we can be sued, so why can't the verbal contracts made by politicians be legally enforced as they are for normal citizens!!!

Should they be held accountable...
No, not really, it is a given that they lie, are ineffective, and occasionally just in it for themselves.

Well, I'm going to quote Gregory House here, since the quote's logic is infallible.

"Everybody lies."

Politics those days, in any countries you pick, is full of lies and cover-ups. Really, all we can do right now is listen to the politicians and try to guess who is bullsh*tting the least. For example, right now in British Columbia, Canada, Christy Clark is in control and she promised there were to be no HST in effect under her wing, but look. We're still suffering from the effects of HST and there's one more year until we abandon Christy Clark to the NDPs. (We hate Liberals due to the fact they crippled the educational system here.)

Anyway, my point being is that we just have to be careful as to who we'd pick, and if it turns out that what they promised is a lie, oh well. It's life. I do agree that they shouldn't lie so much and abuse the system so much, but there's nothing to be done right now unless the whole world decides to unite and protest for the law of politics to be passed.

Everybody else has a valid point, but I think they should be held accountable. They make all these promises, get us to vote for them, and then we look like fools when they don't follow through. Granted, some things don't go quite the way they planned, or they just didn't know that something was not going to be 100% possible, none-the-less, they should be held accountable.

I like Snowdeath: 's idea about the Politicain Law... That is a good one.... Maybe you should make a thread about it, and outline what you have in mind...

Granted nearly all politicians lie, cheat, and steal. However I don't believe that they or anyone else should be above accountability. The way I see if you make a contract, whether it be verbal or written, you have an obligation to honour it. If people do not believe that politicians  should be accountable than why vote at all and give them a blank cheque to get what they want for themselves, why not just go into the polling booth and do a "donkey vote" or just mark your name off and walk out.
