One friend of mine says they are not the same, yet another buddy of mine believes they are one and the same. What do you people think? I personally think they are pretty close but there is a small difference.

In my opinion, they are not the same. A diploma says that you graduated from high school. A GED says that you quit for whatever reason, and you had to come back and get it because it was not working out. 

Employers look at it that way too, I have been told.

They are technically equivalent , but companies don't look at them like that. They see a GED and see someone who messed up so bad they couldn't get their diploma or someone who was too stupid to do so(Keep in mind that's not my opinion.)
If you're thinking about just getting your GED, just finish high school, they difficulty later in life isn't worth it.

C: people who where kicked out of school, and was able to afford to get a GED. Some colleges will accept a GED. But a lot of Major Universities, such as UCF, MU, WVU, etc. Will 9/10 decline your application to their University due to you now completing school. Also there is a new rule where you must have a High school education to join Military Branches.- Venom
