I usually just have my pokemon around the level 45-50 and I have recommended pokemon just use whatever you want. if you try hard enough you can beat them with any pokemon.

I have two level 53 Mew Twos and three level 50 deoxys, and I also have a Kyogre that's level 48....Kyogre is my strongest and he wiped out two of the elite four before I lost.....I played Pokemon Psychic that's why I had the psychic pokemon...
