I just started playing final fantasy 7 for the first time this christmas break and im getting pretty hooked. Actually, I just set up my old PS1 and borrowed my friend's ff 7 game so I could play on a bigger screen. Anyways, I was just wondering, in terms of strategy, which 3 characters would be best to stick to throughout the game?

i should change the title to this thread since i noticed that cloud cannot be switch with another char. so that said which other 2 characters goes best with cloud?

any advice would be great. thanks

Character names and basic plots are used to explain my reasoning in this post, if you dont want to know Character names or plot basics reply to this thread and i shall enclose it in Spoiler tags.


I did it like this:

Cloud, Aeris, Tifa.
THAN

Cloud, Barret, Red XIII
THAN
Cloud, RedXIII, Cid (Cid because of high HP, useful for the first few strong bosses you face once you get him)
THAN
Cloud RedXIII, Yuffie

Cloud - Cause i have too
RedXIII - High Atk Stat, and Good Magic.
Yuffie - 100% Morph Damage (morph is a command skill, itll be super useful later in the game)

Now in saying that, by the end of the game i had all Ult Weapons, 3x+ of every Master Materia AND every character to level 99 (with the exception of Aeris)

The ones I used were Clound berret and wow forgot the third think it was either tifa or redx111
then when i got him i went cloud berret and vincent jsut because i liked them

Barrett is a great choice because of his usual back-row location. Tifa has a strong set of limit breaks that deal loads of damage. Cid is another excellent choice because of his solid stats. Ultimately, however, it's the characters that matter less and the materia that matters more. What you should do is make sure that you have strong materia than worry about who is carrying it.

Since how you equip materia is what is really important, you can pretty much choose whichever characters you want, and you will be fine.

Yuffie because high damage, good limits, and again she is just a cool character. Cloud, most people say they only have him because you have to, but I would pick him anyway because he is powerful even without materia, as they would know if they ever did the no-materia challenge.

if Zack was a playable character i'd pick him with cloud and barret. but my set up would be cloud,barret, and tifa. the reason i chose tifa was cuz she knows martial arts lol. cloud alone is enough to deal wit all of sephiroths forms though. when ur asked to switch party members fighting his 1st form i never switch my members cuz hes easy to defeat

I usually use Cloud, Vincent, and Tifa but it doesn't really matter because the game allows you to make your characters any way you want to through the materia system

once i get vincent, i replace cid with vincent.
of course i level everyone, but just for the last fight with Jenova.

have the two groups fight Jevova, and save your best characters to take on Sephiroth, and hopefully you win.
