what with all the talk about it going on, what are your thoughts on the aussies governments proposed implementation of ISP level internet filtering?

this, in my opinion is a very stupid idea.
not only wont the filter work properly, but internet speeds will decrease by a ridiculous amount.
plus with the blacklist under direct control of the government with no plans to make public what is actually being filtered,
the government will efectivly have control over what we see and hear.
also if this is placed in effect, i might not be able to come here anymore

i don't like the idea of filtering, too much work for something that hackers/crackers/programmers will get past in a matter of minutes.

Spend the money on actually shutting down sites if it's such a problem.

THAT sounds like my cue! :3

Its not like its a world wide filter... its an Australian Filter from the World Wide. Not much of a World Wide Web if websites are being filtered to their leisure. pretty stupid in my opinion. I heard that this was however only being tested among a small amount of people of a particular ISP at the moment. The original idea was the entire of Australia. I dont think it will work, unless they intend to spend a lot of money to increase the overall speed of your access. Honestly, stuff like that though is at the USERS DISCRETION! Why should the government step in over its boundry to block everything THEY find inappropriate.

Actually there is a great reason for web censorship and that is to strengthen companies and get traffic to flock to them. But that is just fked up if you ask me. Site owners pay good money to have their sites up and spend time making and building it up, and for the gov to come in and censor it just reminds me of how corrupt these bastages are.

All the major sites like Youtube and such will not get banned yet all the others will. What's funny is those sites violate more laws then other sites typical violate. Myspace has pedaphiles and youtube is copyright infridgement central.

all social networking sites like myspace and facebook are breeding grounds for pedophiles and identity thieves. And youtube, as jigsaw stated, is "copyright infridgement central." seiously, most of those videos were stolen from peoples' websites

it's another layer of control. It has nothing to do with copyrights or videos or companies.

It has EVERYTHING to do with information control. The internet has become the one place left where people can actually get a wide variety of information from a very wide aray of sources. If governments could control what information we got off the internet they would control all 3 major sources of information out there, TV, Radio and soon the internet.

Once the government gets it's hands on the internet where would you get information free from bias? Maybe not even free from bias but free from censorship?

I think it's a very, very bad and dangerous thing that is happening.

In case you missed I posted this a few months back has good info:

"ISP's have resolved to restrict the Internet to a TV-like subscription model where users will be forced to pay to visit selected corporate websites by 2012, while others will be blocked, only offering access to a small standard amount of commercial sites and require extra fees for every other site you visit." PrisonPlanet

The fees mentioned above can include and most likely will operate like a tv like package. Each subscription you have you get access to certain sites. If you wish to view sites not available on the package prepare to open up your wallets wider.

The internet is driving other forms of mass media out of business such as newspapers and television shows/stations. Throughout the next couple of years this Internet 2 will be in full effect and it basically will feel like a school computer.

People browsing the net will have to pay $55 per month for 40GB of bandwidth but connection speeds will be 10x as fast so you will use it up extremely fast if your not careful.

So basically to sum up Internet 2 it is going to be much faster which is the only good thing, the bad thing is everything else: censorship, thumb scans to go online (to track and charge of any crimes you commit), limited access, pay per view... and most importantly we will be stripped of our freedoms and raped for cash.

Internet 2 is IPv6 I believe and I did create a 6 page report on it in school if anyone want's to see, pretty interesting info.

I find it hard to believe that other "democracies" haven't done something on a smaller scale without telling anyone.

i saw that there was even an article in the new york times about this.
of course they missed vital points like how this plan is flawed and all.
but they talked to minister conroy and he has a way of glazing over the truth.

whenever he speaks this video should be played afterwards:

ziggy/dm, from what I've read, the first test of the filter, a 16y/o broke it in < 15 mins. Its been greatly advanced since then.

Its mainly targeting torrent networks, but is ment to stop pedaphelia too.

As for how good it is.. Theres planty of other blocks around the world, are they broken? (Also, when we say break through... do we mean manage to use bittorrent, or say, access blocked material, like a fallout 3 review?)

ISP's in America already contact people P2Ping, warning them to stop, and cutting off services, this is just a much easier way for ALL ISPs to do this at once.

I think its a great idea, depending what they block.
