I seen a show about how pets in prison helped the inmates cope with their time in prison and has actually reduced violent activety. Although this is a good thing and if i was locked up i would want a pet, i do not think they should have this right because inmates have done something wrong to be locked up and should serve their time without this luxery. What do you think on this subject?

jlh : Well... If the justice system wasn't such an facade then I would say :

No, upon the moment it was decided that they are to go to prison, they should have nothing more then their thoughts to keep them amused. Nothing more then the basics of living should be provided.

But, alas, in this present system, the varying types of people that are convicted sometimes need such things, though really, if the true purpose of prison was to help recondition people, then they shouldn't be in that environment to begin with.

Prison, I would have thought, was to isolate individuals that posed a threat to people, dangerous people that cannot be reached with reason.
People that CAN be reconditioned should not be put in such facilities, but some other environment.

jlh : Sure, that would be comforting and cute, as long as they didn't give them to crazy inmates that would kill them. Also what if the inmates had dogfights?
However if this did happen it would relieve stress for animal shelters that are overloaded. I've watched a few shows about that.

Another question is would the dog or other animal be taken home? Or left for the next inmate? It would be wrong to leave the dog there, because it would never find a true owner.

This is a good controversial question... you got me thinking.

I personally think that our justice system should seek to rehabilitate people, rather than punish them. If allowing them to have pets aids in rehabilitating someone, thus helping lower rates of recidivism and crime, then I'm all for it. I'm far too busy to worry about whether or not people are getting what they deserve. If the streets are made safer by something that doesn't take away from my freedom, then I'm happy enough.

if having a pet means a higher chance of rehabilitation for an inmate then I'm all for it.... I'd want to see that sort of thing studied before having it happen though.

Also depends on the crime I guess . If someone was convicted of animal abuse then they shouldn't get one in prison

LOL Geeo!

Yeah, I've seen this on the show "Lock Up." Prisoners were allowed to care for cats and kittens (no other animals were shown or mentioned as pets.) It was kinda adorable actually. Everyone thinks criminals are cold hearted people (and most are) so seeing their love and affection towards the cats and kittens was utterly shocking!

To answer your question - I see it this way, having a pet in prison should be a privilege for "good behavior" inmates ONLY. As someone mentioned, it is quite "luxurious" to own a pet in prison considering the circumstances, so not ANY inmate wanting one should be entitled to it.

If the inmate doesn't have an abusive background towards people or animals THEN and only then they could be eligible to nurture an animal.....which is kinda hard to find in prison! If that's the case, I think it's okay for them to have pets.

I could understand why the system would allow this though. There are hundreds upon thousands of inmates with no family or children, spending decades to life behind bars that literally have nothing to live for..... and having a pet would give them a sense of hope. It's too bad they ended up there in the first place.

PS - I've only heard of this in two states thus far. I wonder how many prison systems do this for the inmates? That would never happen in the New York City prisons.

I guess it depends on the charge. I never seen or knew anyone keep a pet with them in prison, I find it kind of unusual.

In my opinion, no.
They had their rights taken away the second that they were sentenced away to prison, and letting them have any type of pets kinda contradicts the fact that they did something wrong and are being punished for their crimes, Nya~.
Plus, it would basically be a right that would have to go for every inmate, and that would include those who have murdered other people or were put away for animal abuse. It all just falls onto the fact that they did wrong and should be punished, Nya~.

I could go either way on this one. I could say that they should have pets because it could cut down on violence, but I really want to say no, they should not be allowed to have pets because they might do... things to the animals or hurt them. So yeah, I do not think they should. Give them a Chess Board, or a book, but no pets.

I don't think that they should get pets at all.

They decided to break the law in the first place, so why should they be allowed to have pets?

On3On : Look at Australia their justice system is like frigging paradise compared to ours and they don't have much crime
In our system once a man stays in prison for years that becomes the only life he knows and their fore doesn't know how to cope in freedom...for the most part in Ausrtalia they have much more rights to the point where they know how to cope with regular society
----------
To the pets question why not other then the fact the pet could get really hurt i see no issue

DARKANINE : That was good information, thanks for telling me. You are right, Australia is quite lucky in that respect.
And yes, America (not in particular though) has an absolutely appalling justice system, for too many reasons.

Its something that is doing more damage then good at its present state. (In general.)

As for the subject... Pets are not the best device for helping the convicted, however, there are situations where I would deem it safe.
But right now, it should be thought over more, it sounds a bit half-baked to me.

I think that only some inmates should be allowed to have pets in their cells.  When you think about it, most of the inmates do not deserve to have a pet in their cells because they did a horrible crime.  Some people in prison are in prison because they abused animals.  But, if a prisoner were to have good behavior while they were in the prison, their crime was not too severe, or they reached a plea deal, they should be allowed to have pets as inmates.  This is assuming a "pet" would not consist of snakes, tarantulas, or other dangerous animals that cannot be kept inside cages.

I'd say it's be fine depending why the inmate was put in, if it was for some sort of crime towards animals, then no, anything else, maybe.

My tax dollars are not going to making it easier for a guy that got himself locked in prison to live. He screwed up and he shouldn't have the luxury of a pet that will keep him company and make his life easier.

I think as long as they have proven that they will not hurt the animal, then yes. Giving a pet to a serial killer wouldn't be a good idea because they usually start out killing animals before they move on to human victims. However, an inmate who has proven to be well behaved and hasn't caused much trouble should be allowed to have a pet. But something else needs to be taken into account. If they're going to allow inmates to have pets, they need to have designated rooms in which to visit these pets. In prison, everyone has enemies. If an inmate was allowed to have the pet in their cell or out in the open with other inmates, an enemy of the inmate might decide to kill his pet as a way to make him miserable.
With careful scrutiny and strict rules, I think it would be okay for certain inmates to have pets. The guards would just have to find a way to keep both the inmate and the pet safe.

No, they shouldn't be pets too prison!  All they need to do is, train them too do bad things! Anyway, prison is a place of change; not a home.

If it's just a minor crime, than yes they can bring there pets!

I think it is pretty cool that they allow some prisoners pets.. I heard that it calms the prisoners down and helps them live in such a harsh environment.. Of course I wouldn't feel comfortable allowing my pets go in there unless I knew who the inmate was.

I think this can be a good and a bad thing.

The good thing is that the person imprisoned would have somebody to keep him company, he could talk to the pet as if it is his brother or something.

The bad thing is that there would be needed more food, or the imprisoned have to share the food with the pets, and it would be nasty seeing a person and an animal eat the same food, it would put the person imprisoned on risks of getting sick, and, if the person imprisoned knows how to teach pets and also depending on the pet, they try to teach the pet to dig a hole or distract the guard or something, assisting the person to escape, that's what I at least think.
