On the bottom of you're screen where the time is you should see a little speaker icon click on it and a volume thing should come up click on mixer and you lower the sound of any program you want

In addition to what DARKANINE said, and depending on your operating system..

Click on the volume control beside the time in the bottom right corner of your computer screen, click on "Mixer" and this should show all the programs running.  This will give you the option of isolating each programs volume, select which program relates to what you want the volum turned down on and turn it down or off. 

Not sure about muting the emulator itself.

I was referring to the emulator itself, so I will just use the mixer to cut off sound from Fire fox while I still have sound on VLC player so I can watch my shows while I play. Thanks for all your help everyone
