How do you deal with awkward pauses in conversations?

Usually topic changes are the best way to deal in those conversations. I usually hate when that happens, so I try to come up with something new to keep the conversation going.

pretty much everyone I talk to does to if there is an awkward silence we just start doing things to keep us busy

I say "um" a lot while I try to think of something to say, I tell a joke or a just ask the other person a random question to keep the conversation going.
