Voted as one of PCMag’s top 10 best printers, I almost instantly fell in love with this printer (on a chip-ular level).

A picture of what Amazon likes to call, the Brother MFCJ6710DW Business Inkjet All-in-One Printer with 11-Inch x 17-Inch Duplex Printing, 11-Inch x 17-Inch Scan Glass & Dual Paper Trays.

Starting with the console of the Brother MFCJ6710DW (as I will now refer to it as), users find that there are an abundance of functions that serve nearly all of their printing needs. I’ll just explain an abundance of the fax, telephone, and copy keys to start with. The Brother MFCJ6710DW is able to copy duplex, allowing you to conserve paper, save trees, and carry less paper weight with you. There is actually a key for this duplex copying function, so with one click you can have both sides of your paper printed onto an identical double sided sheet.
You are able to preview your faxes, whether they are incoming or outgoing with a quick click of a button. The actual preview will appear on the LCD screen, meaning easy, accessible, preview of outgoing documents. The Paper and Trey settings also are found to be relatively helpful. Say I wanted to print out a photo on a different size piece of paper. I can just hit the paper setting and select what paper size I want to use. I am also able to select what paper type. The tray setting button allows me to choose which tray I want to print with.
There four main modes on the Brother MFCJ6710DW: Fax, Scan, Copy, and Photo Capture.
The Fax is pretty simple. Just click it and you are able to go into the settings and eventually send a fax. Likewise the Scan and Copy go to the settings and eventually let you either Scan or Copy. The fourth one is the PhotoCapture center, which I will go deeper into explaining a little later.
I will talk about everything that is cool to know about the actual printing. The Brother MFCJ6710DW utilizes a Color Inkjet Technology. What this is, is quite simply, that the printer shoots droplets of ink onto the paper in order to produce the desired results, a printout. This printer is able to print up to 11 by 17 inches. This size is also known as Tabloid. What this equates to is two pieces of normal printing paper (letter sized paper to be precise), side by side. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. 8.5 x 11 inches is the normal printing paper, double the 8.5 since the paper will be side by side and you see exactly where the 11 by 17 comes from. Usually this means that you are able to print posters, books, and much other things that do require large sizes of paper.

Website to buy new cartridges
The Brother MFCJ6710DW utilizes a 4-Cartridge Ink System. The benefit of the 4-cartridge ink system compared to other printers with different systems is that it allows you to change only the specific cartridge that has run out and needs to be changed. The picture above actually shows the four cartridges. The website below it is actually very useful as it has a full page of different combinations of colors that you can buy. I have found that you usually get a single cartridge between $20-30, so replacing the cartridges are pretty expensive. That is something that one must keep in mind when buying a printer. The cost of the ink can be a lot. The solution that I have found with my current printer is that it allows me to insert my own ink through pumping it through a tube into the cartridge. I have found the method to be a lot cheaper than actually going out and buying a new cartridge (or cartridges) every single time the ink runs out. It’s also a lot easier since I don’t have to leave the house. I am not completely sure whether the same can be done with this one, because even if Brother doesn’t like you not spending all your money on its ink, it is probably a way that you can use to cut down on the total cumulative costs of keeping and using this printer. The maximum black print speed is 35 ppm and the Maximum color print speed is 27 ppm. Instead of just tossing that information with units and expecting all of you to magically know what it means, it is best that I explain it. What PPM stands for is Pages per minute. When you print out a normal letter size page of text it is one page. What this means is that if the color is only black, the maximum the printer can print is 35 pages per minute, which is really really fast. Especially to me who is used to a slower 3-4 ppm printer. Of course, this is assuming that the print is actually just normal text and is not chalk full of it. If you are printing pictures or anything other than a normal letter sized page of text, then the printer will obviously run a little slower as it has a lot more work to do. I would not worry about it being slow at all though. I fully expect printing a page that requires a lot of ink, a picture for instance, will print out at least 6-7x as fast as my current printer will print out a page of this review. With such a fast normal speed, the speed of the pictures printing will still be insanely fast. The color print speed is the same thing using a variety of colors and still comes out to be an astounding 27 pages per minute. If you want to compare the printing speed on the international scale, I will help you by providing those conversions as well. Just for a little background information, I am about to put an ISO ppm. What ISO stands for is the International Organization for Standardization, a body that helps consumers make more well-informed decisions. So using the scale for ppm that ISO put out, you can compare the printer to other printers internationally without fear of major discrepancies. After all, the company is working for you to make a more well informed decision. The ISO will also be smaller than the maximum ppm that the company provides because the ISO is not based on any real maximum, it is based on real life printing scenarios, so that you are able to have a nice guess on how it will work for you at your home. The black ISO ppm is 12 ppm. You might think that this is quite a bit lower that the last black value, but when you think about it, this means that you’d be printing a page every 5 seconds for most normal scenario printing jobs. I call that extremely fast. The ISO ppm for color is 10 ppm. This is again lower, but you can easily calculate that even with color, normal scenarios will let you print a page in 6 seconds. Again… extremely fast!
The DPI is just number of dots per inch that the printer can place on a vertical line. The DPI therefore is used to calculate printer resolution, as the more clearer the picture is (because of more colors at a smaller level) the higher the resolution is. The maximum dpi for this printer is 6000 x 1200 dpi. That will give quite a clear resolution as I don’t even think that the human eye can even pick out 1000 points per inch. Of course, if you know your dpi’s well, it’s a little more complicated with how each different shade of color is calculated, but the facts remain the same. This printer will give you a really nice resolution for whatever you desire to print. The normal paper capacity is 500 sheets. Normally if you just go to a supply shop you will get printer paper in packets of 500, so that works quite well. The printer also has the function to produce borderless printing. What this is, is that the printer has the ability to print pictures that have no white space around the actual picture on the edges. This is really good for printing posters, pictures, or anything in which you need to use the full expanse of the paper, you are not limited by any margins whatsoever besides the actual end of the paper. What I really found cool, was that you were able to have duplex printing on any of the sheets that you can put into the printer, even the 11” by 17” maximum paper size that the printer actually takes. I just found this as another very interesting fact that makes me want to have this printer even more. This printer features PictBridge, which you may or may not have heard of before. What PictBridge really is, is the feature through which the printer has the ability to print pictures from your camera without being connected to the computer. What usually happens with PictBridge is that the camera is directly connected, through a USB cable to the printer. From there, the user can choose and select which pictures he / she wants to print out and print.
Whether you have a Mac computer or a Windows computer you have nothing to fear… This Brother printer works on both! Several members of my family have those slim Mac laptops, so instead of having to email to Windows to print on the main printer, they would be able to print directly from their Mac laptops, so I see this as a real advantage. There is a limited Mobile Device Capability, including the ability to print and wirelessly scan images to and from you Apple, Android or Windows phone. The printer comes with a secure print function. What this is, is the ability to set a PIN that must be entered at the printer, before the printer actually starts printing any sheets. The main idea behind secure printing is that print jobs that you do not want others to see or are confidential can be printed from your computer and not actually print from the printer until you are at the printer and manually input the PIN. This may or may not suit your purposes. For me personally, I do not really need this, but I do expect that for several of you, this would be a pretty interesting feature to have.
The maximum amount of pages that you should expect your printer to print each month stands at about 12,000 pages. This is an extraordinarily large amount, but the truth is that this will not be the best thing for your printer. The actual recommended print volumes are 250 – 2000 pages.
A PhotoCapture feature that I would love to discuss would be the Photo Enhancing features for the printing of picture. The printer has 8 different fixing technique; I will go through at least 4 in detail.
1. Auto Correct – This is where the printer will actually do some fixes with the color and contrast of the photo. This in itself is not very unique as most printers actually come with this, but as we go on you will see more unique properties. You can do something similar to this on your computer (Although I expect this printer to do it a little better) by using Microsoft Office Picture Manager. That has options to autocorrect your picture as well.
2. Skin-Tone fixes- sometimes in photos the way that pictures look, it may look like you have less yellow pigment than magenta pigment, it’s just a common error with cameras, and you look like you have sunburn. Of course there are dozens of common camera errors such as these. What this printer can do is fix skin-tone errors like this example. I think that feature is pretty cool. That’s something I never really thought about before.
3. Scenery – I am fairly certain that the scenery fix of the camera has to do with actual moving backgrounds for long exposure photos and things of the like. I expect the camera to help clarify the picture. Here is one example of this type of picture.

4. Red Eye- Most of you should know about red eye, but if you have not, or if you have but do not know what it is, I will explain it to you to make sure that you actually have a correct and complete understanding of what it is. Red Eye is a fairly common occurrence in pictures. When the flash is close to the lens in low light. The eyes do not have their regular visible shine and when the camera actually takes its picture, what happens is that the bright light is actually able to enter the eye before the pupil can react. This means that the light bounces off the back of the eyeball and back out while the camera captures the reflected light. (In case you were wondering, the actual red color comes from the greater amount of blood vessels in the back of the eye). If you want to learn more than just the basics on this, feel free to explore This at your leisure. So basically the printer can help correct small amounts of red eye.

A pretty freaky Wikipedia picture of red eye, LOL!

For the reasons why people would not buy this printer, there is one reason that stands out among all the others and that is that you want to be someone who is doing a heavy duty printing on a pretty regular basis if you want to be using a printer such as this. The printer was built for a good amount of printing, if you print to much, then there is actually a bad problem of the printer being worked to hard and having systems failing. The major problem with not using the printer enough is that you are not well using the money that you have spent. There are printers that print as quality as this one, or even more, but are not heavy duty ones. Then, you might ask why I would like to have this printer if the printer is supposed to be used for mostly heavy duty. Well, the answer to that is that I personally do a lot of printing on a daily basis for things like debate in which I might have to print source after source to look through and stash away. Rather than having to wait hours for print jobs to be completed it would a lot bette for me personally to have the print jobs done relatively quickly. This makes my job a lot easier and I might go from a few hours to half an hour or even less for some of those really large print jobs. Now lets talk about the printer on the opposite end. If the printer is used as a company printer and used a lot (more than the maximum recommended amount) then what is happening is the parts of the printer are wearing out quickly and the printer itself will not be functioning well for that long. Again there are definitely printers out there that are designed to be heavy duty completely for large companies and schools, but this one is not one of them. This printer was meant to be a personal computer and thus not abused in that fashion. Yes, abused, because I can go so far as to say that because you are not using the printer in a right way and are thus ruining it a lot sooner, if it get’s ruined a lot, the limited 2 year warranty will not be of much use and you may find yourself paying a lot more than you intentioned to pay. The best thing to do would be to use the printer the way it was meant to. If you can’t then you know that this printer may not necessarily be the one for you.

There are several ways that you can save money for your purchase, what I would suggest that you do is several things. One major thing that you can do is use less quality paper. Paper can cost a lot when you are using it in bulk, so you may not necessarily need to be printing on the best quality paper. That’s actually something that you should think about because it probably influences a good amount of what you are actually spending on your printer on a daily basis. As I said, this is not really applicable if you are using too less paper, but what’s funny is that it is more than applicable if you are doing too many print jobs. If you are overloading your printer because you did not follow my advice on buying a printer in my last paragraph then what you will have to be doing is saving enough money for the next time that you have to buy a printer because this one will be broken. Less quality paper can also take the form of recycled paper. I am not exactly sure where you can get them, but my school uses it a lot for print jobs that do not necessarily need to be on the finest paper. I think that this is a good idea to keep in mind because if you do find a means of getting recycled paper and it costs a lot less, then you are going to save a good amount of money. Another problem is electricity. The electricity used in printing will be a fair amount. Brother uses a fair amount of energy, not too much, but not very less. I would suggest that you continue a search for a nice printer if you do happen to hit a problem in the fact that you think that the printer will use more energy than you are limited too. The printer utilizes a brightly lit led screen that also is a factor in the energy consumption of the machine overall. Another is to keep it in a place where younger children will play with it. I have had younger siblings wreck a printer (luckily it was an old black and white Xerox one) and I can tell you from prior experience that it is not fun when something like that happens, plus with a heavy printer like this, it can hurt the child as well. Therefore, what I urge you to do is make sure it is in a place where you know they will not meddle with it. You do not want to be in the sad position where you have lost so much money because of having to pay your child’s medical bill + complete destruction of the printer, or the printer itself.

Also, the cheapest way to buy this is for 199.99 US dollars on amazon.

Youtube Videos:

I think that although the video is only 3 minutes long, it gives a really good description of all the different parts of the printer. Something that I have not discussed near the end of the video that I found pretty nice was the great service support that the printers were able to get. I heard a few things that they mentioned. The first one was a toll-free technical support, which they should have, so it is great to hear them affirm it. They have a 24 / 7 online support for the life of your product. What I like about these two is that if anything goes wrong you have great people who are willing to help you out quickly whether you choose to use the online option or the other. That is one pretty important factor when it comes to choosing your perfect printer. You know that when it comes down to it, you have a printer that is able to get ready support. You have bought a really expensive printer, I think that also affirms the fact that you need support that adequately functions to help your needs.
If that first link doesn’t work then this link should work

This one is only 46 seconds and a lot less informative, but a really nice video none the less. It goes over quite a few of the points that I had stated earlier with a few new ones that I hadn’t mentioned, but the best part has to be the music. I listened to it three times. This one also give pretty up close videos of the printer, so it’s a good idea to check this out. At the end it has the thing twirling, so you get to check out the entire machine on all sides rather than just the front.

I just love this one because it shows exactly how to printer will come when you get it in a box. He pulls out a good amount of stuff that comes in the box so that you can easily tell what sort of task it will be to get this out of the box and set up once you get one. I found the voice to be mildly amusing, but you get the whole point without it. The video claims that the printer is 20 kg, which is about 50 pounds. I never actually would have guessed that the printer would weigh that much. It’s a pretty interesting thing to think about though. I never actually went through the fact that this is not meant to be a portable printer at all, so the whole printer aspect of it is that you need to find a good spot for it where you can easily access it. Preferably you want to access it at the same place each time. This is really good to know, because there is a pretty good chance that you were unaware that the printer would weigh this much if you had bought it without research and instead of getting a more portable one, you instead get a ‘monster’ of a printer as that video author comments in the upload comments. I personally do not care whether the printer is able to be moved around or not because I rarely move my printer around anyways. Because of the cost for just a printer and of this weight, it might be more beneficial for you to make this a family printer if you personally are not planning on doing too many heavy duty printing. That way, what you are doing is not only saving money, but you are putting your printer too good use. A printer needs to be taken care of well. One of the main things to know is use, but moderated use.

Okay, so through these youtube videos and other paragraphs, I hope you have a greater understanding on this printer than you have before and a greater understanding why personally the printer is on my wish list, and why it may not be on yours. I think that with a well-informed person that person will not get caught unaware with expenses on the machine. If it does suit your interested, then I am happy to have helped you out!

Happy Printing Guys, it should be a lot of fun!

This is quite the post Sept. I'm not surprised that you want this pretty badly. Heck, even I want the dang thing! Its pretty sweet. If this is one of the best printers out there, then its worth getting.
