My dream watch, the Garmin Forerunner 405CX GPS Sport Watch has nearly all the features I could ever possibly need!

I been running a lot for exercise these past few months, this watch has the ability to revolutionize my workout:
The Forerunner 405CX is able to record calories burned, distance, heart rate, and pace among other things. There are even features that allow you to train. For instance, the Forerunner's Virtual Partner has the ability to use your previous workouts (because every single one is recorded) and have you compete against them. That's one of the cooler features, I would love to keep attempting to get better and better by besting my times each time I train.

I can not even begin to explain how cool the input system is for this watch. It uses what is called a 'touch bezel'. What that simply is, is that by touching the outer circle of the watch, you can use features on your watch. There is only so much that I can attempt to explain in words so here is a youtube video that describes it for this particular watch.

The Forerunner 405CX utilizes a wireless heart rate monitor which tracks your heart beats per minute and uses your heart rate through computations to see how many calories you are burning. This brings about the capability for you to train your heart rate zone to be lower. The heart rate information is saved, so you can instantly compare your current heart rate level to that of past runs. Here below is a link to a Youtube video explaining the heart rate monitor, it's pretty neat.

Something I found really neat was the wireless capability of the Forerunner 405CX. With it, no only can you share your location and workouts, but you are also about to download others with a simple transfer function on the watch. What this means, is that you can have someone race against a run you did earlier, which I find to be particularly cool. Here is another youtube video if this particular feature has gotten you interested

I found the computer to watch and watch to computer features to be amazing. Using ANT+ wireless technology, your computer and watch will automatically sync when within range. You are able to send runs that you designed on your computer to the watch. This allows you to have saved and backed up all your runs on the computer.

This watch also is able to pair up with other tools to revolutionize your exercise experience. Whether it be foot pads for when the GPS is not available or a USB ANT stick, this watch can be really helpful. Say, I wanted to start bicycling for workouts instead of running. This watch is actually the opposite of useless for that! By using the speed bike sensor, I can work out on the bike as well, with all the features the same. This watch is one that is really high tech, but pretty costly for one watch.

The Garmin Forerunner 405 is well known for its compatibility with other training systems, including ones such as Training Peaks, Tanita Health Monitoring, Metabolic Testing, among others. These all serve to prove the features that a high tech watch can bring you. It's not one of my primary reasons for getting the watch, but it sure is a stimulus.

Places to Buy:
For such an expensive watch, it's a good idea to know where you can buy it.
Here are a few shops and the comparative expenses.
Note: These are not in order of increasing or decreasing prices, just in what order I find them:
1. Walmart - 149.98 Walmart Site
2. Target - 204.69 (I think it's a little more costlier because it has the ANT USB Stick side accessory as well) Target Site
3. Amazon - 166.69 Amazon Site
4. Provantage = 249.99 (you can't resale it if you buy it from here) ProVantage Site
5. GPSNow - 279.99 (Also has the USB ANT stick accessory) GPS Now site
6. Runners Roost - 249.99 Runner's roost site
7. GPS Discount - 194.99 GPS Discount Site

Here are 7 different sites. If you find any other good ones that sell this watch then tell me and I'll add them. The site links are not just to the main page, they actually link you to the relevant page of the website.

You can stop reading here if all you want to know.

Say, you are interested in other watches that this brand has to offer, here are a few of the others and what they are known to have:

1. Forerunner 910 XT - The ultimate Swimming Watch

Swimming: Tells distance, efficiency, stroke type, and stroke count
Land: Time, distance, pace
Also has a really cool capability to tell elevation with a built in barometer.

2. Forerunner 405 Regular
This one has most of the same features as the CX, except the CX has the adjustable wrist strap (pretty useful, especially if you have smaller wrists like me) and more accurate calorie computations (if you are going all out with these workouts, meaning you are seriously dedicated). I might even get this one, but if I am going to get a forerunner, I sort of want the best, just to have the best, rather than to get one less than the best and want to buy the better one later, if that makes any sense whatsoever.

3. Forerunner 70 - The cheapest forerunner watch that I have seen, still very quality.
At $129.99, this is the cheapest new forerunner watch that I have seen in my research, but it still is very useful.
It can tell heart rate, calories burned, time used in workout. It has interval workout training, which is like setting how long one round of an imaginary 'track' is on your run.
It has rate-based calorie computation like the 405CX, Virtual Partner, and Customizable screens, all to enhance your experience with it.

The Catch: What I mean by this, is that for everything that can be really really good, there is often something that can take away from the value of it. For the Forerunner, there are no real catches besides one. The Battery Power. With such a high technology watch, the battery power drains quite quickly. What that means is not that it will turn off in the middle of a workout. Well, yes, if you don’t charge it, but it lasts 15-20 hours worth before it needs charging. What that means, is that if you get this watch, you probably are going to have to charge it every night if you plan on using it the next day. If you get the more battery efficient ones, then the length of the battery will last around 20 hours of intense use. What this really means for me, is that this watch is not one that I’ll be using for daily use as to minimize the chance of having to by a new battery. The current battery is rechargeable, and works for a good while, but once it dies, then you’re probably going to have to go buy yourself a new one. That’s the key detriment that really causes me to look over my decision again to have this as a wishlist item. It will take a great amount of responsibility, but if I am able to keep up with the responsibility, then the watch shouldn’t be a whole lot of trouble. The battery itself is pretty nice, which means the watch is more of a one-time pay deal, but if you want to get this watch, then you are going to have to look for the eventuality where the battery fails and you have to buy a new one. Overall I don’t think that the catch is costlier than what the benefits of having the watch are, so I would not let this deter you from buying it unless you are sure that it doesn’t meet your expectations.

I really would love to get this watch, so I am saving up. Not sure whether I will go through, which is why this is a wishlist. This is a really hi tech watch, meaning that I will only want to use it if I am going to use it. I set myself a deal that if I can go 3 months with a daily run without faltering, I will get it. Time to get running!

If you have any more questions, comments, feel free to leave them below, or you can Private Message me. I might not know all the answers, but I am willing to bet that I know a good deal of them.
