So in about ten minutes the numbers for Mega Millions will drop. I know that most of you are too young to play the lottery, but I'm pretty sure your parents bought tickets tonight. The jackpot is, according to the website at about six hundred and forty MILLIONS dollar, but some unofficial reports put it at over 900,000,000. That's a lot of money. With such a huge turn out, I'm sure at least one person is winning the jackpot tonight. Did you play? I put $5 into the pot, and if I win, I'm giving everyone I work with a million dollars, as well as my whole family and a few of my closest friends.

Also I'm buying a brand new DeLorean and a closet-full of Armani suits. What about you?

600 mil in an insane number, I swear if I won I would have a psychological breakdown.

I bought a ticket just because. I know it was stupid, but with a number like that.....

Ah well, I'm not going to win.

My family put in a couple bucks I bet, but our family is rather unlucky. We never win, even if we have great odds. Like once, to support our school, we bought 3/4 of the raffle tickets for a fundraiser (because nobody else bought any tickets), and someone who bought 1 ticket (there were over 100 or so?) beat us haha.

We have some rather rotten luck in lotteries.

It's kind of a blessing. If you win that, a lot of it will be taken by taxes, and you'll be met with the possibility of lawsuits some say.

legacyme3 : With lotteries, if you take the annuity option, you actually make much more in interest than you lose in taxes.

Lazlo Falconi :

Is that so?

Still doesn't change my mind that lotteries are a waste of time.

legacyme3 : They pretty much are. The only reason I ever participate (And believe you me, those times are few and far between) I do so simply because it's fun to imagine what I'd do with $600,000,000. I mean, just look at all of those zeros! Also it's just nice that some of the money at least goes back into the local community.

I worked at a grocery store, so I probably should have, but I didn't bother grabbing myself one.

I just spent about $20 on a Javascript book and requested next weekend off so I could drive home (which means not getting a paycheck and spending another $40 to fill my tank). I could throw a few bucks at the ticket and hope to win. But realistically it's a waste of money that I could really use at the moment.

Honestly, if I ever won for some god-forsaken reason, I'd probably go around donating it to people who needed help... as well as setting aside enough to have Cable for life (because I love the Red Sox)

It would have been awesome to have been the winner, lol.

I didn't play, but I heard that for this one, statistics found it beneficial to buy a ticket. Not usually the case with many lotteries.

I have a better idea, or rather the best idea in the world:

win that lottery
set aside a couple hundred million
when the next one reaches a decent sum spend all that money buying lottery tickets
95% of winning that lottery
????
Profit

To make sure you have a 100% success rate look at the odds of winning the jackpot. Whatever they are, buy one ticket for each odd. (ex. 1:203,451,297 = buying 203,451,297 tickets)

That is INSANE. Its hard to believe that somebody can get that big of a jackpot. Guess you can't say never to anything these days. Not even a jackpot. 1 million? That's nothing compared to THIS. After taxes that is

That's a crazy amount of money, if I ever won that much I'd move to Australia with my family and buy a nice big house. <3

By the by, just so everyone is aware, there were three jackpot winners on that day. For those of you that don't know, this doesn't mean three people got almost 700 million dollars. It was split between the three of them.

Are you implying that 200 million dollars is not enough to do anything with?

I wouldn't even care.

I usually don't fall into the hype of that sort of stuff just because I know the odds of me winning are so low. I played 3 dollars worth of tickets, and that's it. I figured that I can't win if I don't play, and someone has to win. I just have the worst luck though, and rarely win anything.

I only play scratch offs. That is just me. But somebody did win. Three people as a matter of fact. Somebody in Virginia, and I think Wisconsin and Oregon. Something like that. And as far as I know... They are supposed to split it evenly: thirty-three, thirty-three, thirty-three. Even after taxes... each person is getting somewhere around one hundred and seventy-five thousand dollars a piece. That is a nice pay day if you ask me.

Holy crap... that is a hell of a lot of money!

I only wish I was old enough to buy tickets.

If I was to win that kind of money I would fist buy every technological item that would fit my needs/wants.

Then I would buy a plane ticket and a house in Canada and move there. lol

I would then save up the rest, and put a small amount of it in the bank to grow.

thing1 :

You struck out. They were in Maryland, Illinois and Kansas. Personally, I'd try to find some kind of business to start with that kind of money, so I don't wind up broke like so may lottery winners in the past.

It might also be interesting to see what happens with the winner in Maryland. Apparently she and her co-workers at McDonalds pooled money together to buy tickets. But she says the ticket that won was one that she bought on her own. They feel she cheated them out of their share of the money. But it makes sense that people would get that upset with so much money involved, even if she really did buy the winning ticket separately.
