My last avatar (the pair of underwear with a smiley face), which I'll certainly return to eventually, was from another forum that I frequent.

One day one of the users, who had been quite a pain before, started spamming dirty pictures all over the forum. No one was surprised, and it wasn't a big deal. The mods just banned him and moved along. But he managed to rereg and circumvent the ban in order to keep spamming. The owner decided he had to do something to prevent this, so he took away the ability to post images from new users. And to make them easier to recognize in the forums, they were forced to "wear training pants" until they became a regular user.

New users immediately began to complain and the owners decided to just change the color of their username instead. But I loved the idea, and I loved the avatar. So I adopted it as my avatar for the chat room. It lasted a good while, and, as I said, I'll return to it later. But for now I'm using Tim from Braid. I'm trying to stick to the general Tim theme that I've got going on in the forums right now.

So why did you choose the avatar that you're using?

I currently use the seal with the scrunched up face. Before that I had the green warrior from some megaman game, but that had some really weird logic behind it. And before that it was a Nebraska football helmet, because I love the Huskers.

I choose mine because I like shiny articuno and I'm hunting for one currently. :3

I have a FMAB since its like a gimmick thing I use every so often. That, and its pretty cool with the edward elric logo. I like it.

My current avatar a brunette girl blowing kisses I chose for comedic purposes. It makes me laugh every time I see her wink and kiss. She reminds me of a brunette Marilyn Monroe, which is mainly why I chose it. I'll switch it back to the guy smoking a joint eventually. That's my alternative avatar.

I just choose mine based on what I feel represents me best.

My current avatar is "Mr. Insane" as seen to the left.

I am pretty confident in being not sane. As such, I am insane.

Well, my chat avatar is pretty much exactly the same as my forum avatar... so I suppose I picked it to match with that.

Should I answer why the forum avatar, then?

Sure, why not? I'm the same as you, now. I changed my avatar on the forums, and decided to make it the same in the chatroom. It's that little death character from the Cyanide and Happiness comics. I just loved the way he looked, and decided to use it for an avatar, and I like being consistent. It makes it easier for people to recognize who I am.

Alrighty, guess I'll explain the Sega Pat, then!

A while back on eBay there were a few eBay auctions for Genesis "Sega Channel Demo" cartridges. I was pretty excited to see them -  oh, guess I have to backpedal a tad there! Back in like, 1995 or so I was at a local arts festival and a Sega Channel kiosk was there! The Sega Channel seemed so awesome, but at the time my cable provider did not supply it, so I was SOL on getting it.

But yeah, back to the auctions. I alerted some Sonic Retro members to them, and a few days later I was informed that the person who got the cartridges was willing to do a ROM dump. Indeed, the "Sega Channel Demo Cartridge #4" ROM was dumped, and it had a nice little avatar-sized sprite rendition of the US Sega Channel mascot "Sega Pat". He was red, unlike in the normal art. Mine is recolored to more closely resemble how he appears in advertising. 

I currently use the red and white godzirra variation because a friend drew it for me about 3 years ago. It's even my Facebook profile picture. And the only reason I do not have it on my chat yet is because I simple have not gotten around to it yet.

I have a couple of chat avatars. One of a cute kitten. One of Mario, and one of the shades guy you can select from the smiley pics (courtesy of Seph.) I didn't per say pick them for any particular reason except for the shades guy and that's because I want to always beat old Sephitard at being the first to posting a pic of the "guy with shades" in chat. Normally he's quicker on the draw, but if it's my chat avatar, I always win. Always. 

The one I have now is really just a random one but the one I used to have with the girl holding a bow and arrow is the goddess of the hunt Diana. I chose that pict because she has the same name(obviously) and she has a lot of similar physical features as me(dirty blonde hair, etc)

Well I chose Dark Meta-Knight as a avatar because I like using him in SSBB.

I chose my chat avatar to become a small picture of Mario from Super Mario Flash. I seriously enjoy Mario and that was the best and smallest picture I had discovered. It was already saved to my pictures included in my documents. It was as simple as cereal to choose that picture. Why'd you choose yours?

I picked my chat avatar because it was an old picture I had. It didn't look as good as I thought it would, so I decided to scratch the original idea of having the full image, and just having two people hang around a table.

I chose my current avatar thanks to reading an LP on SA.

It just matches the face I tend to have when I look at chat.

Well, I have a few. The one I'm using right now is because of a nickname I took from a game after reading an LP of it. I ended up giving up one of the nicknames in IRC, but I still have the other one, and it's still used.
