ell, my mom agreed to let me have a pet since my sister moved back in, meaning her cat did too. While I wasn't allowed to get a cat or a dog, I was allowed to get either a "critter" or a small bird...and I chose small bird. I never had a bird before so it's a pretty new experience. Luckily my boyfriend lives with me and he has had parakeets before, so he knows what he's doing.

We decided to name him Boba, after Boba Fett...and I assume most people know who that is, lol.

Edit: Replaced with better quality picture

I had a pet parakeet that could talk named polly, sadly it died from eating a saltine cracker. Talk about irony...

Dang. That's unfortunate. O.o I've already been reading up on what NOT to feed a parakeet since I get paranoid about stuff like that, lol.

That's cool. Birds are really cool pets, and even the ones who can't talk are actually extremely smart. My parents had a bird when I was about 10 or 11, I don't really remember it much, but I DID like it a lot.

Personally, I have a phobia of birds, so I'm not fond of them. However, I'm happy that you've found another companion! Well taken care of healthy birds, parakeets in particular can live from 7-15 years! May not seem like a long time but it certainly is!

By the way, is the Parakeet getting along with your sisters cat?

I am somewhat of a parakeet enthusiast. So I will give you some pointers.

If you want to hand train your parakeet, make sure he/she is around you at all times, keep their cage close to where you hang out (most likely your bedroom). Talk to them constantly and give them lots of attention this way.

However, Don't try handling her too early on in your 'relationship'. Birds are very suspicious and easily startled, so at first, it's a good idea to take it really slow. Introduce your bird to your hands and arms by changing the water and food every day.

Once she is not frantically afraid of your hands, you can offer her treats to coax her out of the cage and onto your hands/limbs, or maybe just onto a desk in front of you at first. It may take a while, and if your parakeet is a girl, you're likely to get nipped a few times. But eventually your parakeet will become used to your presence, and possibly "fall in love" with you and want your attention all of the time, because become their flock member.

Also, if you're not going to clip her wings, I suggest closing all doors and windows securely and covering windows and mirrors with blankets, before letting them fly around. Otherwise they could become confused and injure themselves fatally in a crash.

Let your bird out of their cage to exercise and have playtime with you, each day, in the form of walking around on the floor OR flying around, whatever your current home is better suited for. You'll have to make the call of whether to clip their wings or not.

Also, parakeets need to be warm at all times. Don't keep them near a drafty window or they could die from it. Additionally they need 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness in order to remain un-stressed and well rested. So cover their cage with a thick blanket if you plan on staying up late with the light on.

Offer them vegetables soaking wet with water and they're more likely to enjoy them and eat them. Fresh green grasses with the seeds growing on, picked from outside and washed in the sink, are also a favorite.

YourMajestyKen :

Haha, actually they have yet to meet, and I plan on keeping it that way. Her cat gets excited just watching the birds outside...seeing a bird in person would probably excite him a little too much. And I'd rather not put him through that kind of stress. D: My dog (a Shiba Inu) has met the bird, though. He was inside the cage the entire time. She seemed more interested in the bird food than the actual bird lol

Annette:
Thanks for the pointers. I've actually been reading up on a lot of sites dedicated to taking care of budgies and they've pretty much have said the same things you did. Boba is really refusing to eat the veggies/fruits I offer him, but I intend to keep trying until curiosity gets the best of him. He finally finished the treat stick we gave him, so he won't be distracted by that anymore at least.
Also, his wings are currently clipped, but once they grow back out we plan to let them stay unclipped. He stays in my room  at all times and the window is always closed as well as the door.

What's it like having a bird? I've always thought birds were so cool. I often view them as the symbol of life for some reason because of their wings and ability to fly (well most of them). Do you keep it caged up or let it roam free?

catfight09:
It's pretty different from having a dog or cat. They are pretty shy at first because it takes them awhile to get used to their surroundings. Once they warm up though they can be pretty playful and social. They are pretty messy though since parakeets tend to poop every 12 minutes or so.
Boba is pretty quiet but he does like to sing to certain songs or video games lol.
