I've decided to make a thread here to get some attention for Satellablog, a blog/website which in it's current state gives regular updates on Satellaview research and Satellaview fan communities, including internet uploads, ROM discoveries, and emulation breakthroughs, among other things.

Feel free to check the site out and make any comments here!

If you need any other Satellaview resources to learn about the Satellaview, feel free to check out the Wikipedia article, BS Zelda Hompage, The Satellaview (Meta) section of the SuperFamicom.org wiki, and the No-Intro undumped Satellaview ROM list. Or check out the Satellaview videos on my Youtube profile.

If none of those answer your questions, feel free to ask in this thread.

(EDIT: Also, there's still quite a few Satellaview ROMs to suggest adding to the RGR if anyone wants me to fiddle with that.)

Had to fix some of those links, but interesting stuff.

I'm still working on adding those that you've suggested to the RGR, only wish I could read Japanese though lol.

I recall a while back that someone was working on DynamiTracer. Even got most of the hacking done, but needed a translator.

There's also been some amount of work on Treasure Conflix, including a script dump.

Mottzilla also expressed interest in translating Kaizou Choujjin Shubibinman Zero.

I think someone was working on the Sutte Hakkuns as well, but I haven't seen the progress on that in a while.

Overall, though, the Satellaview fan translations are few and far between, the only ones really feeling worth it being the BS Zeldas and Radical Dreamers. As far as I can tell this is mostly due to the difficulty involved in emulating key titles that would be in demand for a fan translation, such as BS Marvelous and BS Tantei Club.

Do you know if it's possible to speed up the intro on certain Stellaview games while played on ZSNES? Well, of course speeding up the emulator works, but in other words "BS Super Mario Collection - Dai-3-Shuu" will take about 4 minutes of just staring at the same screen before you can play it. Was it that way in the original broadcast?

To start, since that's the second time you made that typing error (You're the second person I know who does that, too. Don't worry, it's a step up from crediting it to Bandai. lol!)

I don't have a broadcast of Dai-3-shuu for BS Super Mario Collection, but I do have a bit of footage of Dai-1-shuu, which is not ROM dumped. Too lazy to check the blog, so here's the video on NicoNico.com. This will give you a good idea of how it "Originally" played. As you can see, this is practically impossible to replicate in a ZSNES  emulation environment.

ZSNES always initializes the timer at 00:00 which the Soundlink ROMs would treat as the beginning of an hour. Generally in relation to how an actual broadcast would work, this would be when the broadcast is just announced, and players would start to download, which would take about 3 minutes.

If you want to modify the game to start up quicker, you'll probably have to modify the ROM's timer initialize code so that instead of trying to pull from the server for the time it pre-sets a specific time. This timer value will depend on what game you're playing, though! While BS Zeldas tend to be okay at :07, that's a bit late in for BS Tantei Club, and too -early- for certain BS Fire Emblem chapters.

Oh, that makes sense now - it hadn't clicked in that it's emulating the download time from the original broadcast. Also didn't notice I was calling it stellaview lol.

Ah, yeah, I would also like to mention that for any Soundlink games that may be put up I will (If I know one is available) put up a video of any old Soundlink recording archives that have been recovered from NicoNicoDouga or elsewhere. These will help add context to how the games functioned and possibly give players help on how to figure out how to play.

Although I will state once again that Soundlink games probably -will- have emulation issues. I'd suggest playing them from start to finish to make sure there's no game-breaking glitches.

I don't remember if I mentioned this to you the first time you linked the site to me over in #linux, but I thought it was really cool. I was never really interested in the Satellaview, you know since it was never released here in the States, but I AM curious about it, and interested in technology in general, so I probably dropped a couple of hours on your site. Pretty cool stuff.

Thanls Lazlo! It's good to know the blog has some effectiveness in making the Satellaview interesting!

Be sure to send the link around - especially to folks who can help out! Money donations, a lead on getting some hoarded ROMs, new (Probably Japanese) magazine scans, videos, or anything of the sort would be well-appreciated.

To broadly summarize it, the main theme of the blog is researching the Satellaview.

In terms of what the Satellaview is: the most broad-strokes explanation is "A hardware add-on that allowed the Super Famicom to download games, game data, and digital magazine publications through a Satellite Modem, while at the same time streaming Satellite Radio."
Back when I started up the blog in 2008 or so, information on the Satellaview besides what could be learned from the few ROM dumps circulating at the time wasn't all that much. Since then it's grown quite a bit, but there's still lots of blanks to cover.
Satellaview information is difficult to come by because;

1) Since the hardware add-on is exclusive to Japan - and- was an online service with a limited lifespan, the amount of non-Japanese that have played it - as in, the real thing, Satellite radio experience and all - are likely slim to none.

2) Nintendo appears to consider the Satellaview a disappointment or black sheep of sorts, and only acknowledges it's existence on a rare occasion.

3) Various factors prevent easy communication between Japanese Satellaview players and Non-Japanese researchers, including language barriers, philosophy barriers, etc.

4) The earliest ROM dumps came with little to no actual research on the Satellaview themselves, which led to mass internet MIS-information that to this date needs debunking.

Now, as to how that is done, there's been multiple aspects to look at when it comes to this;

1) Getting info or media from Japanese players (Direct contact has been tough, so mostly we get NicoNIcoDouga uploads and translations of webpages)

2) Digging through magazine publications

3) Purchasing Satellaview 8M Packs and dumping the ROM contents.

4) And lately, advancements in technical documentation and emulation.

And sometimes every now and then something else happens.

The group of people I've been able to credit for contributions over the years has been steadily growing, by the way, considering that I originally kinda just went solo on it with little other the NicoNicoDouga video mirrors.
