I been re watching supernatural and it got me thinking can you really shoot rock salt out of shotguns, pistols and other types of guns? If so is that the only thing you can shoot from a gun that isn't  a rubber bullet, regular bullet, and armor piercing bullets ?

Seimika : You most certainly can shoot rock salt out of a shotgun.  You take a casing, which is a plastic container that holds ammunition, have primer, which causes the explosion of gunpowder when the pin strikes it, and the force of that gunpowder (BOOM!) shoots anything out of the barrel.

You can stick anything that will fit into a barrel of a firearm and it will come flying out.  Some things work better than others but everything will go (except fragile items or reall light items like paper or grass).

Brandon Lee was shot by a bullet tip that was still stuck in the gun barrel which was propelled by a dummy round when the same gun was being used in another scene. . This was due to negligence and half-a**ed prop work. Here is the wiki of it.

Since the movie's second unit was running behind schedule, they decided to make dummy cartridges (cartridges that outwardly appear to be functional but contain no propellant or primers) from real cartridges by pulling out the bullets, dumping out the propellant and reinserting the bullets. However, the team neglected to remove the primers, which, if fired, could still produce just enough force to push the bullet out of the cartridge and into the barrel (a squib load) due to its proximity to the bullet. At some point prior to the fatal scene, the live primer in one of the improperly constructed dummy rounds was discharged by an unknown person while in the pistol, leaving the bullet to travel the length of the gun to be stuck in its barrel by the force of being so closely proximate.[6]

This malfunction went unnoticed by the crew, and the same gun was later reloaded with blank cartridges and used in the scene in which Lee was shot. When the first blank cartridge was fired, the force of the primer, though no longer close to the bullet, was able to propel the stuck bullet out of the barrel a new distance greater than the length of the gun and it struck Lee in the abdomen, lodging in his spine. He fell down instantly, and director Alex Proyas shouted "Cut!". When Lee did not get up, the cast and crew rushed to him and found that he was wounded. He was immediately rushed to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington by ambulance, but following a six-hour operation to remove the bullet, Lee was pronounced dead at 1:04 p.m. on March 31, 1993. He was 28 years old.[7]

Anyway, back to the topic of the thread. You would be surprised by how many things you could shoot out of a gun. Myth Busters actually did a segment that tested a few different assassin bullets from movies. They made a sniper rifle bullet mold, and froze water in it instead of metal to make an ice bullet. The idea behind it was to assassinate someone, and the bullet would melt, leaving no traceable bullet. It shot out of the gun, but the heat from the ignited gunpowder melted it enough to compromise any accurate shot. They also made bullets out of meat for a pistol (the little meat bullets were frozen after made). That worked, but was too soft to really do anything because the heat from firing the gun made them squishy again.

You can shoot rock salt from a gun. Though I think you would have to make the bullets yourself if anyone wanted to.

Seimika : Yeah, if the ice bullet even partially melted from the powder ignition and the meat bullet warmed up enough to become mushy again, I bet paper would warm up enough to either unravel when released or possibly catch fire itself. I am not sure on that though. I'm no gun expert .
