I havnt actualy seen rockband (not released in Aus..  ), but I know from guitar hero, its not the fact of 'playing an instrument' which is fun, its the fact that its not as hard as an instrument, but you get the same effect as 5 years of practice.
Plus its more fun (in my opinion.)

This argument is horribly flawed, real instruments take far longer time to learn, real instruments cost more, real instruments won't get you stardom in two seconds and what if we just don't like real instruments?

Check what I said about instruments. In short: Lay off the caps and try to accept that other persons can like what you don't like.

Note how two of those cost less or close to the cost of the game, and I didn't say to buy all of them. Now I also said OR in the case of people who already own instruments. Also, most people I know who play an instrument share the same opinion as I do on the subject. Playing the real instrument(s) accomplishes more and from what I've heard, electric guitar is actually pretty easy to learn.

ziggy, just because they play these music games, dosnt mean they think they can instantly pick up a guitar and start playing it.
You might want to lay off game bashing for a wile untill you actualy played the game, and if you have, a comment like "I didnt like this game.. it didnt appeal to me" would have been enough.
