screen goes to different resolution can't revert. Have to reset the system

I have a problem with some games that I've started like sonic the hedgehog 2 and one other game that I noticed did this which is The Lion King for the Sega genesis (lol the lion king). Anyways, the screen on my computer turns black and the graphics do something weird and distort the color and the size of the window; however, i can still play the game with it's graphics perfectly and everything, but in the background I don't know how to go back to the original screen of the computer once I'm done with the game, it's like this purple greenish color. I have to completely reset my system. Has anybody else had this trouble?

(I'm using Firefox as my browser and I have windows vista..)

***Update: Nevermind, I figured it out, problem kind've solved lol .. But I would like a little bit of info on this subject onto why it does that

Well I know when I load some of the games, my laptop switches to Windows Vista Basic. I don't know every detail, but my general guess is the colors in the game are too simplistic for regular Windows Vista, so it goes to a simpler version.

I had it freeze in Vista Basic once, but I toyed around with my laptop for a bit and managed to fix it.
