I have mixed reactions to this.

Matheny is a former catcher, and thus has a certain natural aptitude for leadership.

He should be about as competant as Joe Girardi is if it's any indicator, although the Yankees have far more to work with I feel.

My major worry is they took him over Francona (experience), Oquendo (Pujols wanted him), and Sandberg (who I'm surprised isn't a manager yet).

I think the Cardinals know more than we do at this time.
