I see both sides. No items shows who's got the better skills and that's what we're trying to prove here in a tournament. However, having items adds more fun, entertainment and excitement to the battling.

Certain items add excitement sure but some just make the battle dull. I'm talking about things like the hammers, smash ball, ice berg and any other cheap koing item.

A lot of the items are pretty cheap but I do like the pokeballs a lot because they bring a lot of excitement, especially when you've got 4 people battling and 2 pokemon going crazy out on the field, that's when things get chaotic and I like chaotic

Yeah, if we do a tourney then some items should definitely be excluded. But others should stay. I say leave the smash balls. Talk about a test of skill just to get a hold of one of those things ! Then you actually have to make your Final Smash hit in most cases. There is a lot of skill involved there!

Yeah there is some skill involved but we should probably have very few to no items. The point of a tournament is to find out who is the best and items, as MVas said, adds randomness which sorta destroys the point.

I'm not sure how the tournament would go, if it'd be just 1 on 1, or 4-way free for all or what, but if it's 1 on 1, those 2 people battling eachother could possibly fight once without items, and once with items and in the case of a tie, the tie breaker would be without items.

The tournament could also contain a variety of game plays, here's an example (broken down into phases):

Phase 1 (when everyone is still in it)
Everyone battles everyone with a game of best out of 3 (this would be the only phase with items)
The top 6 contestants move on
(if it's 8 people, everone would play 7 games)

Phase 2 (when there are 6 contestants left)
Team battles. Everyone gets a chance to team up with a different person for 5 different games, which would result into having teamed up with each person and for a total of 5 games. Of course, it'd be 2 on 2 with this.
The best 4 move on. This mode would also be using stock lives at probably 4 lives.

Phase 3 (when there are 4 contestants left)
3 sets of free for all with 4 people all battling it out. Would be battling in the coin mode.
2 best players move on.

Phase 4 (last phase; only 2 contestants left)
They battle it out with 1 round but for 10 minutes. The winner is the champion.

Anyway, with the above rules I came up with, the tournament would not only last a long time (which is a good thing), but would give us a variety of gameplay.

Davideo, if I may say: You are awesome. I can really see that you have given this some really serious thought already. Ugh, I want my Wii so bad (still waiting for my game shop to call to say they have gotten it in).

Wow, that sounds like a plan O_o, nice tournament ideas.

A coin match.....?

The mode where you play for coins, I forgot what it's called exactly but I guess it's possible you haven't tried it out.

Basically what it is, you fight eachother and depending on how much damage you do to someone, coins fly out of them and you gotta gather them. It's pretty fun and adds a different twist to the Super Smash Bros gameplay.

I loved playing that, the coin matches are fun.

No I know what coin matches are, but they aren't really suited for a tournament, esp an online tournament.

But since a Super Smash Bros mode, and since we want to find out who's the best at the game, it'd make sense to include it. To be considered the best at a game you have to be good all around and at every mode

Eh, I'd expect lag to be worse in coin matches, it's also weird to wait so long to have a coin match, but whatever.

Just think of it as "whoever has the highest score wins" type of match, not just a coin match. One match that sucks is Stamina, where you just have HP.

No, it really doesn't. You know the % thing? How that works? Well, imagine this: Players do 40 damage a hit on average and you all have 150 HP. Each. It's so annoying because the thing is, the move that Roy does(that charge that takes forever), at least in melee, drains 25 HP. It's not good, because matches are too quick and there's no, "hanging on the side of the arena with 740% damage hanging by a limb" it's more like, "Your HP is 0 and then the match immediately stops, with a slow-motion dramatic death.

Anyway, never expect stamina mode to be in tournaments that pay cash, it's too ridiculous and HP is for role-playing games with dungeons and stuff, not for a fast-paced kick-you-in-the-face fighting game with tons of explosions and fighting to the death. It just doesn't work.

I don't think I've ever played the HP mode in Brawl, it must be unlockable because I dont have it

Maybe they removed it, because it was like a red-headed stepchild of game modes. It was the biggest burp in SSB's history as far as modes go.
