I consider both a different type of genre.

In Turned-Based you plan and pick according you what is the best for the situation and what the other players picked, you try to reach something the fastest and prey and the other players before you did not have the same idea. Overall this genre is based off how much experience you have and how much you read up on the game although there are times where it can lead to an unforgettable but enjoyable power struggle if both players have similar skill. (I only played M.I.M.E as far as I can remember so I am not sure)

In Real-Time it is depends how well you excel in the different gameplay departments, some players like to focus on defense and resource gathering and slowly improving units, buildings and bases. The player may sometimes attack the force that just attacked him, hoping that most of the attacker's units are down. Other players like to do rushes, quickly building weak units but in huge numbers, hoping to rush around the map and destroy the enemy's weakest area. Real-Time requires you to focus a lot on speed as if you are too slow, your whole base gets blown up by a huge force before your base has any powerful defense yet. You also need to be good at multitasking.

I prefer turn based.

It may be because I'm better at them, but when it comes to strategy, I can do anything, however, I can NOT do something when I'm held to a strict time limit, like an active battle system.
