Summon Night is an RPG for GBA with one special feature.
Story:
In Summon Night Swordcraft Story it's about Cleru, a boy who wants to become a Swordcraft Lord like his father. And to accomplish that he is participating in a tournament, and the winner of that tournament becomes a Swordcraft Lord. He gets trained by his mentor Bron and gets stronger with each fight and the help of his friends. At the beginning the story seems to be very flat but then al of a sudden there's a spirit from the past which controls some of the characters and which wants to destroy the City of Swords, Wystern. The story starts of slowly and is developing but it never really captured me.
Gameplay:
As disappointing the story is as better is the gameplay. As a son of a Swordcraft Lord you are able to forge weapons. And that's the great thing about Summon Night: there are five types of weapons (sword, axe, spear, knuckle and drill) and you go to your master Bron and he will teach you some new techniques with each type of weapon. And when you have the necessarily materials you can forge the weapon and use it. This forge-feature is something very creative and something I haven't seen in any other game. And this feature is the best about the gameplay, in my opinion. You're just walking around in one city, Wystern, and when you get to another city you can't do much but buy and sell things and talk to people. And you just got 3 or 4 different dungeons in the whole game. You've got your labyrinth in Wystern which consists of 50 floors and you have the 2 or 3 dungeons besides that one; and that's something disappointing, because you're walking through the labyrinth almost all the time. When you're fighting you're in a 2D perspective which looks cool by the way, but the fights itselves are not very challenging not even the boss fights. When you know the pattern of the enemies it's easy to win the fight. But in the end I liked to fight even they are very easy and, of course, you get experience and you're character, Cleru, is getting stronger and stronger.
Graphic/Dungeons:
The graphic itself is good and there are good looking anime characters. The City of Swords looks good and has a nice almost steampunk-like style. The other 2 or 3 cities on the other hand are just boring and got nothing interesting. The same with the dungeons: the labyrinth almost always looks the same and the other few dungeons are almost exactly the same except the colours.
Sound:
The sound is the most disappointing thing. The music is okay and got nice tunes but I just heard 3 or 4 different of them. And the worst is that your hearing the music of the city Wystern almost all the time and that can be annoying.
Conclusion:
Summon Night Swordcraft Story has many mistakes such as the few cities, the same looking dungeons, a flat story, a music with just a few different tunes and easy fights but in the end it's a game you don't regret playing. The fights are easy but because of the perspective kind of cool and the weapon forging is something very interesting and unusual.
